There has been a lot of discussion about the iPhone 4 Retina display lately. Forget about it and look at the amazing resolution in this extreme close ups. Compare it to the iPhone 3GS screen or your own phone. Insane.

Clearly, the 326-pixel-per-inch display will make an impact in consumers. The quality and density of information of the 960-by-640-pixel screen is as good as most printed magazines. At least, it has me impressed. If the iPhone 4 camera also lives to its promise, I'm game. [Scobleizer]

Bitch bitch moan moan. Here's an idea : just use it. This is like listening to hi-fi buffs who claim their multi-billion dollar install is better than their neighbour's because they have a piece of equipment that TELLS them it's better (even though the difference is impossible to hear).

New iPhone = better resolution than old iPhone.

Competing models = comparable resolution to new iPhone.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that in 6 months time, competing models = better resolution than new iPhone.

This is the law of diminishing returns - at some point there's no reason to make the screen any higher resolution in the same way that there's no point in DSLR camera makers trying to reach higher and higher megapixel counts. That's why they all switched to low-light capability, because they finally figured out that 18Mpixels is more than enough for anyone.
