It may be second verse, same as the first, but audiences sure turned up for Avengers Endgame: Encore.
Box office reporting (thanks, Deadline) shows the re-release took top spot at the global box office with $86 million. With that extra take, Endgame’s total BO comes to $2.885 billion, sitting comfortably between the first Avatar ($2.9B) and Spider-Man: Brand New Day ($2.45B). And at $26 million domestic, Encore’s scored the third-best start for a reissued movie after Star Wars’ theatrical return in 1997 made $35.9 million and Lion King 3D netted $30.2 million in 2011.
Given how much an event the original Endgame was in 2019, the success of Avengers Endgame: Encore isn’t too surprising to hear. For many, the real draw was nostalgia for the original Avengers and the pre-COVID days. In that regard, Encore seems to have done its job, with the additional material meant to set up Avengers: Doomsday…well, those are what those are. It also doesn’t hurt this is the first MCU movie to get a re-release since Spider-Man: No Way Home in 2022 and Endgame’s own return in summer 2019.
So yes, there’s still plenty of love for the Avengers, or at least the ones everyone grew up with. What does it means for Avengers: Doomsday’s box office? We’ll find out in full on December 18.
