The first official synopsis for the long-awaited (or at least long-in-development) sequel to 1996’s summer blockbuster is here. And yes, those Fourth of July-hating aliens are back for round two, but we haven’t spent the last two decades merely mourning the sacrifice of Randy Quaid.

After “Independence Day” redefined the event movie genre, the next epic chapter delivers global catastrophe on an unimaginable scale. Using recovered alien technology, the nations of Earth have collaborated on an immense defense program to protect the planet. But nothing can prepare us for the aliens’ advanced and unprecedented force. Only the ingenuity of a few brave men and women can bring our world back from the brink of extinction.
If we have 20 years of new alien-based technology on our side, that sounds like we’d have a much-better chance at fending off our extraterrestrial attackers... unless the aliens can somehow take control of our weapons... because they continue to operate on Mac OS, which the first movie taught us is the preferred operating system of all intergalactic civilizations. Hell, the aliens may not need to hack our weapons systems, just shut down all the iPhones. Civilization would totally be screwed.
