In the rack-mount world, there has always been the low-end—tipping full-size PC cases on their side on shelves—and everything-else, with expensive price premiums on ‘server class’ hardware. Granted, even stock x86 hardware is usually better in ‘server’ fittings, with lots of extra monitoring hardware and that coveted 1U form factor. In between both extremes, though, is Tyan, long-time maker of really nice server-class motherboards for the relatively tiny ‘build your own rackmount’ market.
Now they’ve got the new Transport GS12 [pictured] and GX21 1U barebones servers, relatively inexpensive 1U rackmounts in single- and dual-processor flavors, respectively. The GS12 can be picked up for less than $500 US, minus drives, ram, and processor—not a bad starting point for the closet home server system you’ve always meant to get started on.
