Help is on the way for those overheating Xbox 360s—the triple-core processors inside the Microsoft gaming console are slated for an upgrade early next year. Chartered Semiconductor, one of two manufacturers that make those processors (IBM, the chip's designer, is the other), said the new Xbox 360 CPU will use 65nm technology instead of the 90nm technique used in today's Xbox 360 processors. The chips will consume less power and create less heat, and will be cheaper to manufacture, too.
Because of that more precise manufacturing technique, these new CPUs will be theoretically faster, but it's not clear whether they would run the Xbox 360 software any quicker than existing chips do now.
