For years, we’ve marveled at the amazingly creepy design brillianceof H.R. Giger’s Giger Bars in Switzerland, along with the now-defunct one in Tokyo. And now, it looks like we might be getting a Giger Bar right here in the United States!

Portland, OR real estate developer Andy Davies wants to create a Sci-Fi Hotel somewhere in the U.S. — and it sounds like if all goes well, he might create a chain of them. And he wants the first Sci-Fi Hotel to feature an exact duplicate of one of the two remaining Giger Bars, the one in Gruyres, Switzerland.

R. Giger, HR Giger Bar is a work of art, an original and completely
unique experience. The ceiling, walls, floors, fittings, tables and
chairs are all modeled by the artist in the style of his acclaimed
‘Alien’ biomechanical environment and character designs.
Day and night, inside Giger Bar, guests are enveloped within the womb
of a mythical beast. It’s warm, inviting, even comforting. It’s about
contrast, juxtaposition. Old vs. new. Clean vs. biomechanical. It’s an
out-of-this-world feeling that is very cool and hard to leave.
There are only two original Giger Bars in the world. The first in the city of Giger’s birth, Chur, Switzerland, opened in 1992 and is still running successfully. The second is in the Chteau St. Germain, Gruyres, Switzerland, which opened in 2003 adjacent to and part of the incredible Museum HR Giger which opened a few years earlier.
This one, Andy Davies feels, is the key one
to replicate. HR Giger describes the Giger Bar in Gruyres as “the dot on
the ‘I’ for the museum, illustrating that art is something you can use
in everyday life.”
To create Giger Bar, Sci-Fi Hotel LLC is taking the key elements of
Giger Bar Gruyres and reforming them to fit the perfect space in the
U.S. The important part is total authenticity. Giger and his team will
be completely involved in the process and ultimately, sign off on it.
This is a Giger work of art, not just a copy, but the real thing, with
Giger’s involvement from start to finish. It is the vision of HR Giger
himself, not Sci-Fi Hotel, not any business plan, it is art, pure and simple.
