Reader Bill Barnes writes in about Microsoft’s Smart Display technology. He disagrees with my assessment that Smart Display is doomed to fail, and that they might actually find some success. Here are some excerpts from his email:
“The basic scenario is that you do most of your work at your desk. But it’s handy to be able to do that work elsewhere. And especially handy not to have to worry about how to get it there. So you have a few of these Smart Displays scattered around the house, one in every room maybe. You just pick it up wherever you are, log in, and you’re back to work.
“And with no hard drive or ports, and limited memory, they won’t be that expensive to make. Just a touch screen, a PDA-class microprocessor and battery, and a wireless card, running whatever is required to be a Terminal Server client. Certainly not full windows, so you can even save on ROM.”
