Mike Mignola gave us Hellboy, so it’s probably not surprising that he’s designed a totally bizarre new monster, which you can glimpse above. But what the hell is it? That’s an excellent question, since it’s on the cover of a new anthology called What the #@&% Is That?

What the #@&% Is That: The Saga Anthology of the Monstrous and Macabre is edited by John Joseph Adams and Douglas Cohen. It was inspired, in part, by a meme that blew up in 2012, showing a crazy Lovecraftian monster with the title What The Fuck Is That, and a pull quote from Stephen King: “I don’t know what the fuck is going on.”
So every one of the stories in What the #@&% Is That includes a moment where someone asks that oh-so-pithy question. And here’s the full table of contents:
