Dark Horse's new Serenity comic miniseries will finally take us past the tragic—and heroic—events of the film. So what can we expect for our slightly smaller group of Big Damn Heroes?

Dark Horse has officially announced that Serenity: Firefly Class 03-K64—Leaves on the Wind #1 (of 6) will appear in comic book shops on January 29th 2014, and shared this cover by Dan Dos Santos. Zack Whedon is writing the script and Georges Jeanty is on art duties. The press release reiterated the plot details we've seen in the earlier announcement:

Malcolm Reynolds’s crew shook the ’verse to its core when they laid bare the crimes against humanity undertaken by their sinister government—the Alliance. Always outlaws, Mal, a very pregnant Zoe, new pilot River Tam, and the other surviving crew members are in greater danger than ever, and everyone’s asking the same question . . .

This week, the Nerdist also posted an interview with Whedon that hints a bit more at what we'll be seeing. Leaves on the Wind opens a significant nine months after the events of Serenity, with the crew hiding from the Alliance in a remote spot after exposing the secret of the Reavers. It's a comic that will push the story forward rather than serve as a return to episodic form:

What sort of hijinks and adventures can we expect the Serenity crew to get up to in the new book? “Hijinks do not ensue much in this series,” Whedon explains. “They’re too ‘almost dying’ for that.” In the wake of events of the Serenity film, “they are on the defensive a bit, they’ve been painted one way by the media and the Alliance is trying to stamp them out harder than ever,” he said. For those of you hoping for some lighter-hearted adventuring, Whedon remains optimistic. “Hopefully when this adventure is done, they’ll be able to hijinks it up a bit more.”

Whedon also says that once he's wrapped Leaves on the Wind, he's ready to pass the Serenity writer's stick on to another writer, and put a new voice behind the Firefly crew.

How about this: the Alliance remembers that they were actually after River for more reasons than her knowledge of one classified project, and they decide that they should recover their multimillion-credit military investment after all. The story goes back to the driving elements of the series instead of the movie.
