Why are fairy tales and legends banned from the National Book Awards?

Salon’s Laura Miller exposes a weird injustice: The National Book Awards’ rules forbid them from considering “collections and/or retellings of folk-tales, myths, and fairy-tales.” Apparently it has to do with concerns about originality, but the NBA says it may reconsider.
