Why Do Artists Like To Change The Genders Of Fictional Characters?

One of the unwritten laws of the Internet is that once a character comes into existence, someone will draw that character as someone of a different gender. One artist explains how playing with her favorite characters' genders helped her connect better with the media she loves.

Allison "Mu" Jones drew a guest comic about genderbending (or as she prefers to term it, "spectrum sliding") for Erika Moen's Oh Joy, Sex Toy (NSFW ads, and other comics in the series are NSFW). Certainly there are a host of reasons that artists play with characters' gender, including to experiment with character design and to comment on the portrayal of differently gendered characters. But it's interesting to see Jones' personal take on how gender connected her more closely with fandom.
