This could very well be the most fantastic premise for an urban fantasy movie ever. Will Smith is set to star in The City That Sailed, about a New York street magician who is separated from his daughter in London…. and winds up sailing the entire island of Manhattan to England to retrieve her.
That’s amazing. The story is centered around the little girl who discovers a collection of magic candles that grant wishes, which explains the floating island and separation. The batty movie will be directed by Shawn Levy of Night at the Museum and Real Steel, who is basically the Lord of shallow but entertaining, family-friendly films, so we’re channeling a very kiddie vibe from this picture.
Deadline is reporting that Audrey Wells (Under the Tuscan Sun) is working on rewriting the original draft to The City that Sailed, which was first scripted by io9 favorite Andrew Niccol (Gattaca, The Truman Show).
