Windows Mobile Internet Sharing Made Easy (3G iPhone!)

After tooling around with getting internet sharing working on the Sprint Mogul for a bit, we discovered this small WMWifiRouter app by Jorrit Jongma. It's pretty much an install and run affair (save a bit of internet connection Wi-fi setup beforehand), but the only thing you have to watch out for is using a static IP address on the device you want to access it with (iPhone/laptop/whatever) because there's no DHCP server present. There's a good guide in the XDA Dev forum as well. The result? A 3G-ish iPhone. [WMWifiRouter]

  • This is very, very sad. I feel for the iPhone population.

  • You guys are slow have been doin this for 2 months now. I used my old 8525 and threw it in my backpack, a couple of tweaks to power usage and a homemade battery pack later I had a hotspot that could go for over a day straight of heavy usage without a charge, not to do away with the heat ;)

  • Oh poor feature-starved iphone - a phone for geeks you are not.

  • iPhone = bleached blonde bombshell who's just pretty to look at and that's it. like, totally.

Mogul/8525 = "plus sized" pal who's easy and will do anything you want, but you can't show off in public because you're secretly ashamed of its size.

  • Yay! now i can stream all my porn without looking for a Wifi Spot on my iPhone! (Mac Donald's had banned me) =/
Damn! First i need to get an iphone an then a Sprint Mogul...
    Humm i better wait for a 3G iphone :)

  • The mogul is pretty nice, but now there's an even better phone, and that's the AT&T tilt/HTC TyTn II, the second generation mogul. I feel bad for people that bought the iphone because of all of the hype, but for those that bought it and knew it had edge and was slow as molasseses, you could've gotten something much better, a phone running windows mobile with 3g. Idiots.

  • I suppose if you're already paying $70 a month for your iPhone and data, another $10 a month plus the cost of a 3G capable phone to "upgrade" yourself to 3G isn't that bad.

Me? I'll stil with only one device to haul around and a $30/mo SERO plan with all the 3G data I want.

  • Sorry to tell you folks, Gizmodo's just doing the story with an iPhone to get your attention. iPhone = Eyeballs. iPhone owners by and large don't care that its only 2.5G and not 3G (or else they wouldn't have gotten the phone in the first place). I was watching YouTube over EDGE just earlier today. Kermit brings Rofl over to watch 2 girls 1 cup. Riot. Didn't really matter that its EDGE... queued right up in burst mode. The 3G iPhone will likely be faster than most of the 3G phones out now, as the 2.5 G iPhone already stands up pretty darn well for what people want to do. The new one will likely have 2 cameras, video upload and teleconferencing.... so, THAT will be nice. Until then... Zzzzzzzz.

  • Yeah, my AT&T 8925/Tilt is moving right along on the 3G Network here in Japan. Works fine with DoCoMo and Softbank. (Data too) I'm sure the 3G iPhone will enjoy the data goodness as well as soon as an agreement is made with one of the two aforementioned companies.

What's funny is when people see that keyboard slide out, their next words are; "Jack Bauer". Although, DoCoMo and Softbank carry the AT&T 8525 equivalent, I guess many people haven't seen it around.

I really dig WM6, but even I might buy a 3G iPhone when it hits. Then again, my iPod Classic and the Tilt are a pretty good combination already, plus the Tilt has built-in GPS and can play music in a pinch...and stream it as well.

Zeemonster - I agree with you on the bombshell.

  • ATTENTION!!! ALL YOU NEED TO KNOW:

    [www.thebestpageintheuniverse.net] - Article about iPhone

    /ATTENTION!!!

(However if I had the money, I would still want an iPhone.)

  • @easy2panic:

he was talking about the first week iphone.

he compares it with that nokia that is ONLY $360 well, iphone is $399 now

SSH? dude the iphone is a full unix system.

it doesnt matter if any mobile browser can see what iphone sees, you cant be prductive with that controls. iphone multitouch web FTW

    custom ringtones YEA
    record video.. soon
    mms, YEA!
    record voice yep

The phone its not perfect, actualy sometimes i feel less productive in some tasks than with my sonyericsson k790 like adding a new contact or calendar events. but i think the iphone is not for people that just use it. I open my car with a custom wifi app, I have scientific calculator, ant i have a lot of fun hacking so i think the hacked version of the iphone is the best fucking divice out there.

  • Sounds like a good way to use anything over anything (ie, EVDO device over GSM and vice versa) -- as long as they both run wifi....

  • if I combined this hack and an eyefi card for my digital camera, could i have pictures post to my flickr account live?

  • nevermind...according to support.eye.fi,

"The Eye-Fi card requires the use of a wireless router or access point to upload photos to a computer. At this time the Eye-Fi card does not support ad-hoc (computer-to-computer) wireless networks."

    boo.

  • A sad excuse to put the wors iphone and 3G in the same sentence. There is no such thing as 3G-ish, or any ish! I COMMAND YOU!

  • Man... this really looks the iPhone look pathetic..

Usually if i want to use 3g, even on some really old phones, I just emmm... Use it..

People who own the iPhone must be bigger tards than i imagined if this is what they resort to..

  • Does anybody really even need to access the mobile internet that quickly that they are willing to carry around two phones? If your so desperate to go on the blazing mobile internet and get your whack on, you should just a Win Mo phone.

  • @CRAZYSAMZ
The tilt(tytn2) isn't the next gen mogul (titan), it is the next gen 8525 (tytn). Mogul = CDMA, Tilt = GSM.

I like how the HTC device is so good it can even make your iphone perform better.

BTW, I use this program on my 6700 to show off and sell the ipod touch where I work.

  • I love my 6800. Everything about it.

The thickness is something some people may point out but it doesnt feel any thinker in my pocket than my last phone, moto v600. Honestly, I couldn't be happier with it.

Oh, and the internet sharing capabilities are awesome.

  • @Shuft:

Dude, the sprint mogul and the 8525 is basically the same phone. Yes, one is cdma and the other is gsm but they are essentially the same phone.

  • @ CRAZYSAMZ who said, "now there's an even better phone, and that's the AT&T tilt/HTC TyTn II ... I feel bad for people that bought the iphone"

If I wanted a phone that was nearly an inch thick, I'd just carry around a laptop. Love it or hate it, when the ladies see that huge bulge in your pocket, they're gonna know it ain't your **** and they won't be impressed. ;)
