Garmin's trying to catch some of the Apple buzz for the upcoming Macworld next week, code-naming its latest software project "Bobcat" and being all secretive about it and stuff. There's no indication of what the software will do, but all guesses are welcome. We'll go first: How about some GPS action for the iPhone? No, that was more of a wish, because the Garmin guy mentions "Mac compatible" software on the official Garmin blog. But wait. Isn't that OS X running on the iPhone? [Garmin]

But will the voice be Bobcat Goldthwait?
Garmin: Bobcat.
OS X: Leopard.
It makes sense!
Maybe the new software will come out with crime statistics for the areas your driving in. That way if you need to pull off the highway for food or gas you'll know what kind of area your going into and avoid being a potential victim of a violent crime.
There goes calling the next minor upgrade to Mac OS, "BOBCAT."
I am pretty sure that is a lynx... not a bobcat.
How about just supporting Garmin GPS's on OS X to begin with? I have a Garmin eTrex Vista handheld unit and the only way I can upload maps, manage tracks, etc. is through their Windows software.
Full mac support for Garmin software and hardware. They promised this 'by the end of 2007'
better late than never.
and Magellan? nada...
I predict a dash-mount for the iphone that has GPS fm broadcasting and charging.
OK, first of all, Garmin units with USB interfaces are quite well supported on OS X, and have been since this summer. They've got a Web Updater that checks for and installs firmware updates, a POI Loader for installing points of interest, and their Communicator Plugin, which loads POIs directly from websites like Geocaching.com.
Iphtashufitz mentions his unsupported Vista, which I presume is an older RS-232 serial unit and will not be supported. If it's a newer USB Vista, just download the new software from Garmin.com.
The one missing piece for TOTAL OS X support has been the lack of MapSource, which allows viewing, transferring, and use of map data. I believe the other signs all point to seeing "Bobcat" be "MapSource for Mac."
Yippee!
"Isn't that OS X running on the iPhone?"
Couldn't be_ Because OS X supports Flash - and the iPhone won't run Flash Apps_ So it must be something else_
I'm thinking a handheld GPS with voice recognition would be the next big upgrade. I'm talking better voice recognition than "Go Home" like in Lexuses and now Fords. I mean "Garmin, take me to 111 Peachtree Street in Atlanta, GA," or "Garmin, Take me to the nearest McDonalds."
Yeah, Garmin has been bullshitting about full Mac support for ages. I mean how hard it is to come up with a viable Mac GPS mapping application to bundle with a $500 GPS unit? MacGPS and GPSy have been doing it for years. What is so scary is how barebones these programs are - using them on a PC is like throwing the switch on the wayback machine and dipping into DOS... It boggles my mind that it has taken so long to complete a Mac version. For crying out loud these simple apps run on PDAs and cellphones but not natively on a new Quad Core Mac Pro!
Anyone have the coordinates of Garmin's HQ? I have a missle with a payload of poo I want to target at them!!!
"Give a, give a, give a Garmin.
Give a, give a, give a Garmin"
Every freaking year I can't get that jingle out of my head.
@IphtashuFitz: funny, i did the map update for my garmin nuvi 660 on my g4 powerbook.
In-car computer by Apple (with Garmin GPS of course). While they make products that can be used in a car, they don't really have any car-specific products. That would be big.
@uberfu: Just buy a Garmin, it'll have the co-ords of various Garmin HQ's already loaded onto it. :)
Yay ... typical ... turns out just more half done beta crap. I think someone needs to give 'The Chet' a decent beating.
