Interesting bit just tossed our way by the Canon rep when we asked about a 5D follow-up, slightly paraphrased: The EOS-1Ds line (their full-frame pro DSLRs) is on a three-year upgrade cycle. The 1Ds Mark II came out in 2004, and the Mark III dropped in 2007. The EOS 5D came out in 2005.
Draw your own conclusions.

Damn you Canon! I'm going to buy your 5D, but i won't be as happy about it as I should be. Every other camera in the line up has been refreshed to the point that the 5D is starting to look a little stale.
2005 + 3 = ....
Music to my ears. I've been waiting for the 5D update for over a year. Unfortunately even with the 3 year/ 2008 theory, they could be waiting till Photokina in the fall.
well since it was actually released in fall 2005, it would only make sense if they'd wait till fall - unfortunately.
And yet in 2006, all you Canon people were ragging me for speculating that there wouldn't be a 5D refresh in 2007.
I like my 40D more than the 5D. If I worked in a Portrait studio I would rather have the 5D but for fast moving acxtion shots, it is hard to be the 40D price point. I can't afford the EOS-1Ds line.
well, I have owned a 5D since they were released and it is great, but it clearly needs refreshing this year. It's biggest problem of all: a stupid one! It is too easy to rotate the program dial in your bag to green (dumb) mode, and then take some pics without realising. Nowadays I have to check that dial EVERY time I get the camera out of the bag! Live view will be very useful too.
As you say - I'm sure Photokina is where they will launch the replacement. Nikon has caught up at last and Canon needs to take a step ahead again. Wouldn't be too surprised if it is a little cheaper too!!! (competition is a good thing...)
My 5D is only 10 months old and frankly, I still am barely exploiting it's capabilities. I have no need to upgrade. The good news is though lots of amateurs who don't have a ton of money are going to be able to get a slew of gently used 5Ds for a song once the new model is released - so that's cool.
The 5D is one of the best cameras on the market.
Not always 3 years... 1Ds came out in September 2002, 1Ds MkII came September 2004, MkIII came August 2007. So first was 2 and second was 3.
I'm still optimistic that Canon will update the 5D sooner rather than later. It really needs the sensor cleaning features that the 40D has. I could care less about much else.
Yah, the 5D is easily one of the most capable dSLRs in its price range. And it's really cheap right now (even buying brand new) - It's probably 60% of what its replacement will cost. The 1D Mark II is extremely cheap too (used), at 1/3 of what the 1D Mark III costs with over 90% of the features. HUGE value for the dollar.
I'd like really only like to see three changes to the 5D: ISO6400, 14- or 16-bit, and higher frame rate. Live view seems kinda gimmicky on the 5D, but I'd take it too.
Announced at Photokina.
Canon available Nov 08-Jan 09.
Publicly find-able in Feb-Mar 09.
Damn you Canno !
If you keep teasing your supporter like this, soon or later you are going to lost
your businees to Nikon or even some Sony !!
If it's Canon, the body will still be overpriced and crippled - even though it will have a good sensor.
Why would you wait for 5D if D3 is here and every other Canon dude is auctioning of his equipment? I don't know what happening but these canon guys around me are going nuts over D3, and I'm not even talking about Nikonians who are lost in lala land.
