Recording VGA-quality movies is nothing new, but DivX and LG just announced that the LG Viewty smartphone can now record VGA-quality movies at 120 frames per second with what looks like a software update (new ones will ship with it pre-loaded). Best of all, it records in the DivX format, which means you can watch it back on all kinds of DivX devices (your computer, various PMPs, the Xbox 360 and the PS3 for example). Besides recording at such a high rate, the phone can also take 5-megapixel stills, for the times when one picture says more than 120 of them. Apparently we haven't heard of quad band phones. It's complete BS that they make all these cool new phones and conveniently leave out the one American band (not the Grand Funk Railroad one either)
They're free on contracts in the UK (about 30quid/$60 a month).
My brother couldn't stand the touch screen tho - it has to be pressed quite hard unlike the iPod touch he has.
No mention of a download on LGs support site to add this to old phones.

where have all you guys been? the KU990 has been out for a while now. this article is about the update to the software. NOT about the device. you can easily get it off the internet. ebay has tons of them. theyre GSM 900/1800/1900/hsdpa. as in "t-mobile and Att compatible"....
I cry foul. There is no possible way that this camera shoots 120 frames per second. Sorry. It can't write to flash that quickly.
Well whats really wierd is that there have been so many releases for t-mobile but none of them but the wing, the slide and the LX have hit the shelves.

Well, as an owner of a Viewty and an iPod Touch I can't believe just how embarassingly kee-rap the phone is. The Viewty's touch screen requires a stiffer finger than I usually want to use in public and the software and UI seem bewildered by everything I try to do. Scrolling is goddamn tricky; you have to try and gouge the screen with your thumb and even then the menu/list has a tendency to bounce back the other way when you take your thumb off. Texting's a nightmare - laughable Graffiti/handwriting implementations or a baby qwerty keyboard which lacks simple things like apostrophes. You know, like we use in the English language. Wanna use the numbers keypad during a call - for voicemail etc? You can do it but it's an unimaginably awkward pain in the arse.
I know the iPhone/Touch software is a tough act to match but LG should be ashamed of how poor this thing is to actually use on a daily basis. A-fucking-shamed.

@ollifl: Actually cingular uses the same phones as the rest of the world. A lot of there phones work in europe. My last phone was a cingular branded quad band phone. Supposedly on my current phone you can unlock the fourth band also.
Why not make 720p HD at 60fps? I'd be happy with 30 though.
I never understood the point of mashing a camcorder into a cellphone. A more practical match would be a cellphone and a quesadilla maker!

i got this phone and it is amazing, it is the best phone i have had. i did have the lg Prada, and the touchscreen was a bit crap on that, but on this phone it is so much better, and they made it so much easer to text on as well. and the video is very good,
