HG, or Head in the Game Controllers, had a brilliant idea to mod Xbox 360 controllers by duplicating some front face buttons onto the back. Why would you need this? So you won't have to move your thumb away from the stick—which usually controls aiming or camera movement—in order to hit the action buttons.
This isn't just for gamers who want a slight edge on the competition, but also for disabled gamers who need to relocate buttons because of an inability to hit certain key combinations. In either case, it's a pretty neat idea that doesn't really cost all that much more ($69 for two buttons on the back or $89 for four) than a standard controller.
360 Fanboy also points out that Gamer Modz has a similar modded controller product that's customized for Halo 3 and Gears of War. They've also got a "turbo" fire controller that will hit the triggers at about 50,000 times a second. [HG Controllers via Xbox 360 Fanboy via Oh Gizmo]

I like the idea alot, but it feels like cheating to me...
But then again, from the PC world perspective. Better hardware is an advantage... so whats the big deal?
I guess I don't find this particularly kosher on a platform [console gaming] that is praised for being an equal playing grounds.
Brilliant!
I actually had this very idea. I'm glad someone made the effort to make it.
Reminds me of the FPS Master for the original Xbox. (except this one isn't fugly). Nice mod!

This isn't their idea...this has been a common mod in the original xbox mod scene FOREVER (I think 'FoeHammer'on the xbox-scene forum boards was credited with it). However, that was for just the A and B buttons, not that you'd have much use for the X and Y.
Or, game makers can just copy the great control scheme from PS3's Resistance: Fall of Man
@impreza: Agreed. In a competitive environment, I would definitely classify this as unfair advantage. One of the beauties of console gaming is that the playing field is much more level than on PC, so it's more of a case of skill vs. skill.
Seems like a cheat to me, sorry. Not so much the buttons on back but the turbo fire trigger sounds fishy.
if its available for everyone its really not considered an advantage no is it. I personally have a HG controller and it takes away the split second hesitation. And if in fact this has been done before no one has done it to this level. I really dont see how this could be considered as cheating, if you don't like someone using one, get one yourself and see the difference.
@Steel_Pelican: But all quality of hardware issues offer some degree of advantage.
Certainly the advantage had by owning this controller is more easily obtained than the advantage someone who can afford a huge screen top of the line HD screen has over someone with a smaller screen and lower res.
Turbo-fire is back? What is this, 1982?
Originally saw this mod done when Halo: Combat Evolved was released. Not new at all, have done this to my own controllers. Very simple mod to do. Just connecting some leads to each end of the buttons connections and drilling a tiny hole in your controller for a small button...
I think this is perfectly acceptable. One area that the pc wins is the plethora of control options. I have never found anything as convenient as a five button mouse, but this mod brings the controller closer to that level. the idea hear is that you don't have to move your thumbs or trigger finger away from were they should be. This wouldn't be such a big problem though if console games utilized fully mappable button layouts. Then i could just set my controller up however i want and not have to work with the limitations of what the game dev's though would be some good layouts.
@STEEL_PELICAN: There is no skill in console shooters as this controller is marketed towards console FPS and all console FPS have a built in aimbot to make aiming easier and if that wasn't enough then guns are designed(GoW) to compensate for the players lack of aim by having the gun spray a large area of the cone of fire. Not only that most popular Console FPS have shields or huge amounts of health so that if you get shot you just have to go hide.
Skill, quickly responding and aiming is still the domain of the PC FPS while timing and location are the consoles! If you consider being at the right place at the right time Skill then I don't see the point in arguing.
great idea, but different buttons back there would be needed for different games. which means either multiple controllers, interchangable buttons or software changing up the functions of those back buttons, the 3rd choice being the least cumbersome and expensive, but making it kinda difficult to label the buttons.
pro console gamers use disfigured hands in a claw shape to overcome such trivialities. thumbs on analog sticks, first fingers on face buttons, seconds and thirds to hit the four top buttons, and finally your little fingers for grip.
[works for PS, though never really necessary in its full form.]
Our controllers are a little bit different than HG's. They remap buttons mostly but they do have a Rapid Fire and a Gears of War active reload mod.
We have the ONLY Halo 3 mods, as well as Gears of War active reloads, and Rapid Fire. We do not offer button remaps at the moment.
If you are looking for a Rapid Fire for Halo 3 nothing tops the Rapid Fire on our Halo 3 mods.
@impreza:
Am I missing something, it looks like someone just drilled holes in a 360 controller.
OK, so really the main reason this has sucked in halo3 is that you can't aim/look and melee. the other buttons are for picking things up switching between them or juming. but the 'bumper jumper' layout fixed that deficiency. pwned.
i had an fps master for original xbox. the idea seemed a no brainer to me - all controls available all the time instead of needing to relinquish aim on the right stick to do anything like melee or board. unfortunately the fps master sucked because the sticks themselves were taller and lighter than the xbox default, making you swing wildly around. possibly it couldve been relearned, but it would have taken months of playing like an idiot to regain the familiarity of standard controller proportions.
i still believe the idea is sound though, and this looks like the best solution - use a normal pad. ive questioned why pads these days even use face buttons at all except to accommodate, literally, retards who need to physically see the bright coloured buttons they need to press. your thumbs should be on the sticks at all times.
id hesitate to call it cheating. its more that the default option sucks and this fixes it. it still uses a joypad, the buttons are just more readily available. if you want to criticise cheating, look to the kb/mouse adapters out there.
so thumbs on the analog sticks, middle and index on the shoulder buttons, and now ring and pinky on the back of the controller. thank god nerds aren't on the evolution scale or else we'd grow another finger O.o
I got good using the FPS master controller with Halo 2 - and had a lot of fun using it - the shape of the controller was fantastic (like bicycle grips almost) and the buttons were soft touch enough that a light twitch would be enough to activate them)
The ONLY problem, was the build quality - the triggers were like air soft triggers and really poorly made - one snapped off in my fingers one day and that was the end of the FPS controller...
This looks like a suitable replacement though.
gonna buy this NOW!@
