It took damn near forever, but the HTC Shift—the UMPC that was supposed to change your mind about UMPCs—has finally hit store shelves in the States. To refresh your memory, the features include an 800 Mhz processor, Vista Business, 1GB RAM, a 40GB HD, Quad-Band GSM/GPRS/EDGE, HSDPA/UMTS, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. Unfortunately, it will cost you more than many conventional laptops at $1629.99. [onthegosolutions]

Vista on 800mhz, 1GB RAM, and a (in all likelihood) 4200rpm hard drive?
For over sixteen hundred dollars?
Mercy.
^ You think thats bad? Go look at a Macbook Air
(Yeah, thats right. I said it. Now flame me, bitches!)
Just dont banhammer me plz! :)
The high price could be that its a phone with vista? So just think of it as a really good PPC, so that's probably why its so much damn money.
I don't want it though.
Does this thing run aero? Does flip 3d work on Vista basic?
this thing can be good only if it runs windows mobile
@Spyvie: It has Vista Business and runs Aero.
@Crescent: It runs Windows Mobile as well: Two separate CPUs, and two separate OSes, and allows you to shift between the two -- hence the name.
@--Tito--: Nope, you can't use it as a phone, data only.
HTC?
How about graphics drivers? included?
Nah!
I was so excited to read that it is available in the U.S. ... but then I saw VISTA.. and the price tag.... no interest... better stick with my Treo 650
What's amazing is that this wouldn't draw nearly as much flack as the Air. All of its wireless connectivity aside, I see nothing about this thing that warrants a $1,600 price tag.
@hofodude: I was gonna say, probably still doesnt include graphics drivers.
Oh wow, it's got vista...!!!
/sarcasm
wow, imagine holding that thing up to your ear to talk. geez.
If it's anything like my HTC Touch - they can have it
why does everyone hate vista so much...ive been using it for over a year and i love it, i had vista basic and recently upgraded to ultimate...and my system seems to run even faster than before...
Good call on Vista, HTC. Make sure your system feels even slower and more bloated than users should expect from the 800 Mhz chip and jack the price to craptastic proportions.
I have one .. In fact it runs Vista well .. it's really is surprising .. build is solid which from HTC is a change
This device was cool a year ago when it was announced. I was psyched to get one and try it out as it looked like the ultimate UMPC. Now it has a higher price tag and it's a year late to the party. I'll pass....
