Copy and Paste on Your iPhone With iCopy

icopy.jpgEveryone wants it, but for some strange reason we have been denied copy and paste functionality on the iPhone. With a new bookmarklet called iCopy, we can finally copy text and URLs that can be plugged back into Safari or an email later on. To get this miraculous technological development, simply visit the iCopy site and follow the instructions. It isn't a perfect solution by any means (all of the text you paste is sent across the internet), but it should tide you over until someone at Apple decides to make an official solution. Videos of iCopy in action are available after the break.

  • 2 CONFUSING!!!

  • Want, although it does seem quite awkward.

  • why does apple not include copy/paste ability?

  • who exactly was the one deciding on what should and shouldnt go in the iphone thats all i wanna know

  • Man! That was so sad. I feel for the developer, but that's just way too much for a copy and paste functionality.

    To copy:

    1. Start the browser.
    2. Go to bookmarks.
    3. Select Copy/Paste URL.
    4. Click Copy (you can zoom in if you like. Woo hoo!)
4.1. Click what kind of copy you want to do.
4.2. Confirm that you are ready to copy .
    5. Flick to the browser page you want to copy.
    6. find the paragraph you want to copy.
    7. zoom into the paragraph you want to copy.
    8. click the paragraph you want to copy (now it's copied).

    To paste:
    ...

    Man oh man!

  • I guess I need to watch the videos when I get home (they're blocked here at work). I'm trying it, but I'm not getting it.

  • I'm going to be honest here. As an iPhone owner, a Windows-to-Mac switcher, and overall "Apple fanboy", I don't know if the iPhone has all the power it advertises. The current functions are fantastic, but the rare Safari crashes, miscellaneous freezing, and other little bigs lead me to believe Apple can't truly pack everything into this hardware.

A 3G update will increase speed, but I think they need to increase processing speed, or perhaps memory. Even with this recent SDK announcement (awesome), they're saying each application must run alone. I'm not sure the iPhone can handle something as "simple" as playing music, being online (AIM), while browsing a website. Again, I don't expect it to be an iPhone Pro, but multi-tasking on an iPhone shouldn't be difficult to perform, if you're going to allow develops to bring applications.

Perhaps that's why copy and paste isn't available. Maybe part of it is getting the proper solution, but part of it might be the work that would need to occur in the background, in between copying and pasting. Just a thought. I love my iPhone.

  • @JustEaton:
iPhone definitely does not have the power it advertises. I get angry watching the ads on tv where it loads web pages instantly. I live and work in a relatively major city (Boston) and the service I get is abysmal. Even with a good wifi connection I have never loaded a webpage fast enough to include ina :30 second commercial.

  • @JustEaton: I don't usually have a problem with mine if I'm playing music and surfing the web or whatnot. However, in the rare instances where I've gotten phone calls and text messages at the same time, that bitch just freezes up and won't even shut down for like 5 minutes.

  • @jetexas: I lol'ed at:
that bitch just freezes up and won't even shut down for like 5 minutes.

  • Email URL?
That is already available. When surfing just hit the + and then "mail link to this page".
As for text - it did not seem too confusing complex to me:

    In safari:
    1. Go to bookmarks and select Copy/Paste URL.
    2. Click "copy/paste" and then "email text"
    3. Click the paragraph you want to copy

Still... apple should just add a one-touch gesture!

  • who gives a shit..

  • @Death: I'm not sure if you own an iPhone, so I can't compare experiences regarding web browsing. From my experience, if I'm at home (or anywhere) with a strong Wi-Fi signal, I can load a page just as fast (or very close) as I would on my Mac or laptop.

@jetexas: I agree with your statement. It's not a constant irritation, but you notice it more when you start adding more tasks (music, internet, phone, checking mail, etc.). And yes, when it finally does freeze, it'll often stay stuck until you hard-reset it.

In general, I'm totally optimistic about future development and Apple's dedication. I'm simply worried that the iPhone can't handle multilpe tasks very well, which interfers with the experience. I want to listen to music through my headphones, be logged into AIM (away message), and be checking email. Three simple tasks, but it might hiccup.

  • i think the main reason apple hasn't included copy/paste functionality is because they havent found an easy/intuitive/apple-ish way of doing it so that it wont take 10 steps like this solution. but still it is pretty silly to leave such an important feature out.

  • the correct response is apple hasn't figured out a way to add copy and paste by charing you a few cents per use of it through itunes

  • .@mqasem:
    1. Start the browser. (not a step in copying, plus I'd hope your already browsing or how would you know you even want to copy something)
    2. Go to bookmarks. (true)
    3. Select Copy/Paste URL. (true)
    4. Click Copy (you can zoom in if you like. Woo hoo!) (again, I don't read pages zoomed out so you'd probably already be zoomed in)
4.1. Click what kind of copy you want to do. (true)
4.2. Confirm that you are ready to copy . (true)
    5. Flick to the browser page you want to copy. (you're already on the page you want to copy from)
    6. find the paragraph you want to copy. (You've probably already found it when you selected copy)
    7. zoom into the paragraph you want to copy. (probably already zoomed in as I said above)
    8. click the paragraph you want to copy (now it's copied) (true)

So really it's 5 steps. Quit being so dramatic.

  • Seriously, you guys can sit there and accept all this? seriously?? I mean, its the lil things that count and there are many missing.

It would be nice if the community made as much noise of its faults as they do for its triumphs so at least Jobs will hear and believe that they aren't all ready to bend over and receive his cock.

    We want Flash
    We want system-wide copy/paste
    We want full bluetooth profiles
We want multitasking on all apps
    ...and many more besides.

No, we shouldnt have to wait for iphone 2. Maybe the SDK can remedy some of these issues.

  • @alukard: I couldn't care less about Flash but the other stuff? Definite wants. I've personally vented to anyone that matters (or doesn't) about the crippled Bluetooth - that's MY biggest beef. There are so many ways in which my previous phone (a Nokia) was more functional that it sometimes does drive me a little bit crazy. I'm a Mac-head from way back and I do love the iphone in spite of all of the mind-boggling omissions but for cryin' out loud, Apple.....c'MON, already!

  • geez ya'll are some fanboys... "my iPhone can turn off, WOW". Well, I Phone every day and never paid apple a dime and my treo600 does copy and paste much easier.

  • Its just that..Apple needs a quad-core processor for the iPhone to include that function...XP

  • The interface isn't currently well designed for an easy copy/paste function. The phone can not read your mind about whether you want to select text, or pan the page. If you are in a text entry box, it doesn't know if you want to copy text or move the cursor. The reason this solution requires so many redundant steps is because the current interface is not set up to allow any sort of text selection at all.

  • Props to the creators of iCopy. Big step in the right direction, IMHO.

@alukard: Ordinary people putting time and effort into things like iCopy is going to get more of Apple's attention than whiney comments in forums. I hear what you're saying, though.

  • lol at needing all that just to copy & paste.

  • WOW, got all excited till I WATCHED THE Video, PASS... I can make dinner faster for bejebee's sake!!!!

Oh well, heck maybe Apple could do something one of these days, seems impossible that they have not been asked a million times...

  • If Apple doesn't think you need Copy/Paste then you obviously don't need it. I mean jeez!

  • Here's a much better solution:
