New Windows Mobile Slingplayer Coming Soon (iPhone Version a Possibility)

Sling's set to release an updated Slingplayer this spring for Windows Mobile on both the touchscreen and non-touchscreen versions, with the new features being more optimized supports for newer handsets. They're also working on an optimized Nokia N95 8GB client, and going to expand their stand-alone Symbian clients to include UIQ support as well. What probably interests people more than optimizing an already-existing client is the possible introduction of a new client for the iPhone, which Sling tells us they're currently evaluating the iPhone SDK for. TV on the iPhone's generous screen means you'll never be bored again.

Oh Sling, why doth thou taunt me so?!

  • how well would streaming tv work over att's edge?

  • @Johnny Chimpo: horribly? I'm guessing it'll only be worthwhile via WiFi. Still, where will it install from? iTunes Apps store? Or will it be a jailbreak SDK kinda app?

  • I have been streaming Slingbox over Edge for a long time now (2yrs) and have no problems with it. The only time there is a problem is if you are in a moving car. (obviously)

  • @axiomatic: Thanks for your feedback. I figured it had been done before with winmo devices but wasn't sure how fat the pipes need to be to stream video.

another question; anyone out there using an iphone with WHS and webguide have any feedback on how well (or poor) they work with each other?

  • learn2nothaveshittyiphone and get a phone with hsdpa...

  • This is probably gonna look 100x better on the iPhone.

  • I'd be happy with a slingplayer for the iPhone that only worked over WiFi.

I sent an email to the Sling development team last week after there was no mention of Sling in Apple's iPhone SDK keynote. I was pleasantly surprised when one of Sling's development team emailed me back, almost within 30 minutes of my hitting send. I had expected to get no reply at all.

Sling told me that next to a player for Blackberry, an iPhone/iTouch slingplayer is their most requested feature. Now that their beta Blacberry player is out, they said the development team is digging into the SDK from Apple to see how they might implement something.

Take that for what it's worth. I did think it was a nice gesture for them to reply to my email.

  • The current WM app is already very slick. Can't wait to see what the new one will look like . . . of course I don't have a Sling (love Orb, but still would love to see a standalone app for it on the client end rather than browser-based.)

  • Awesome, can't wait to use iPhone Slingplayer over Wi-Fi when I'm outside having a smoke, or on the crapper.

    \Not a DVR user
    \\Yeah, I know

  • the problem with the iphone is that its strictly h264 for the time being. Its my understanding that sling in its current form is WMA, not sure about the mac port. I have a friend at slung who tells me that managment desires the new $399 box that comes out later this year and does native realtime h264 encoding and will be the only box to support the iPhone.

  • helllllooooo.... 3g.

  • What's the best phone now for the slingplayer?

My girl's contract is up and she needs to get a phone. We want to get the best one for this.

Also, do you need the slingbox hardware at home to get it to work?

  • To be complete: I just checked my ATT HTC 8125 and I get a sustained 195k to 210k per sec from ATT (violate my privacy) Edge network streaming from my Slingbox Pro connected to a Tivo S3 and traversing Comcast (comcrap).

However, my office is right next to a cell tower. So your mileage may vary.

  • Viewing my Slingbox with my 8925 (Tilt), eats the battery, even when only using 3G. It would be nice to check it out on my iPhone, even though I don't use it as a phone, the WiFi option would suffice. (I'm not buying a new Slingbox though, until my Classic dies.)

  • @Pay_Me_Or_Pay_Me_No_Attention: Yeah, you're gonna need the Slingbox hardware at home to get it to work. Wishing your media onto you phone just ain't gonna cut it.

  • I wish more WinMo phones came with bigger screens. I love WinMo.

  • @Alex: This would suck, esp. after I recently invested in that proprietary HD component breakout cable to hookup my Apple TV. Knowing my luck the next Sling will have component input built-in.

  • If you just want TV streamed to a great portable device via WiFi, why not Sony's LocationFree to a PSP? The new PSP even allows you to output the stream to a TV using optional video out cables for the PSP-2000 system.

Cheaper than an iPhone, no contract, can output to TV, and is available RIGHT NOW!

    Just my $0.02

  • Jesusfuckingchrist can you giz writers manage to write a story about windows mobile without somehow talking about the iphone?

First it was Flash for windows mobile, now Sling player. I'm going to look for a new tech blog soon if the fanboy-ism is not contained.

  • @spaceman37

Yeah I agree. I don't mind paying a little more for it to a degree ($299 is my price ceiling), but I think Sling is attempting to "monetize" as fast as they can.

  • @marm0lade: then leave already, whiner.

i'll definitely buy a Sling box of some sort when an iPhone-compatible version is released, but not before then. SlingPlayer is the only reason i would consider a WinMo phone, and that's not enough to make a purchase.

  • @marm0lade: I have to agree to a point. It's great that Giz loves their iphones, but give it a break. It just doesn't bother me enough to stop me from coming back, the Giz pwns all, even if they are fanboys.

  • @TonyRockyHorror:

You would love an environment without differing view points where everyone thinks exactly the same. Yay for groupthink! Right? Tool.
