I've actually been running Firefox 3 since it hit beta, and have been pushing it on people since beta 2, when the sweet new address bar hit. But Mozilla says that it's now is ready for the ungeeky plebes to climb aboard, at beta number four. Previously, they considered the ride potentially too bumpy for the infirm and elderly. gonna grab it for ubuntu later today!
sweet, is it better than IE? does it render pages like they are meant to be?
I am personally sick of IE-7! opera does not do it for me, lets hope FF3 cuts it!
So its out of Beta now? SWEET!
I've been running the nightly builds for a while and haven't run into many problems. The main thing is add on compatibility. I likes it though.
"Firefox has stopped working"
*sigh*
@nutbastard: dude i totally thought you were going to grab it for vista.
side note, i don't quite understand why this is news. "Our week's old beta is ready for the public!" Seems like this story got legs because Mike Schroepfer said so.
anyhow, here's to FF3.
@pradster:
"sweet, is it better than IE?"
surely you jest!
blows. IE. away.
@Paradise:
"ubuntu" is my new "ron paul"
@pradster: is your post a joke?
@daftrok: no it's not. that's why i think this news story is rubbish. (i'm taking a swing at the original writer and not matt b)
Well that killed my google bar. That stinks, I use it all the time and there doesn't seem to be a new one for the Beta 3 version.
Crap.
How much is it?
@SchruteBuck: $50.00, I'll send you the paypal address to send payment to.
I wont be moving to FF3 until portableapps.com releases their FF3 pack ;)
I have been using maxthon (i know it's a shell) for as long as I can remember, if I can navigate with ease on ffox3 like I do with maxthon it will be a win.
or you could just get opera...
I'm stoked about FF3. I swear FF1 never crashed on me once, FF2 crashes on me at LEAST once a day. Here's to hoping FF3 is better (and judging by the wired article the other day, I'm thinking it is)
Hope they have this in the 'buntu repo already.
@Abouna: Its a joint paypal remember. I have the other one. I will give you the other one, saend half to the one he is gonna give you, and half to the one I am gonna give you.
I always felt weird about using Firefox on my Mac. What does it have (besides plugins) that Safari doesn't? How are comparisons against Safari? I always see it go head-to-head against IE7 and Opera 9.5, but not Safari that much (except in obviously biased Apple tests).
Will all my plug-ins work?
@pradster:
What the hell kind of question is that is it better than ie....of course its better! Its BEEN better from day one.
internet explorer is the walking dead. Its time to shoot i.e. in its head and get it over with.
no, not all your plugins will work....
I had to uninstall because 1 click weather, fire ftp and foxmarks are not compatable.
@FlipSwitch: That depends on what kind of extensions you're using. Some extensions only need to have their max-version updated. Others need actual code changes. Depending on how eager the developer is to keep up with the new betas it might or might not work.
@FlipSwitch: Hit or miss... I lost two or three, nothing super important.
I have been running the beta for a little while, stopped about 2 weeks ago when I had this wierd thing going on where one day Firefox would install .12 then upon reboot would reinstall 3 Beta 2, then back to .12, and just keep repeating. Every reboot I would get a new welcome screen for Firefox. I gave up, uninstalled, then reinstalled 2. I just reinstalled 3, and I'm happy with it. (though from my previous post you can see I have gotten the dim screen of death from it)
@pradster: Welcome to the internets :D
@FlipSwitch: Most likely not, but give it a couple months and they'll come around.
@dagamer34: this should give you a comparisson but i can't find the tests that proved firefox was faster than safari
[www.zeldman.com]
@pradster: Your joking right? People still use IE? You poor, poor, person...Get your but on the firefox bandwagon and view your porn sites even faster.
@cracksbacks:
I have actually always liked Moz_FF but as you pointed out quite a few of my apps are not compatible with FF including the most important one; iHEAT, my IT call tracking software.
I have pretty much scrapped FF in favor of the holey old IE.
I'm not in love or hate with IE, but being behind a Cisco SPI hardware firewall I have yet to have a single (knock on wood) issue with the holes/backdoors IE can sometimes create.
Is there an extension or theme to bring back the Firefox 2 UI, leaving just the under-the-hood changes?
I don't think I'll be trying the beta since I still get Firefox 2 errors a few times a week.
I'm still annoyed that you can't "tab" through sections properly on Firefox, on a Mac. If you're filling out a registration forms, it'll skip through places where you need to select (i.e. State, Country). So you can tab through, filling out areas (name, email, etc.), but you have to manually go back and select those.
Another example would be forms where you need give your age, with a birthday. Not sure porn, just graphic videos. You know. Anyways, doesn't seem to be fixed in Firefox 3.
alrighty, i'll give it a spin
I just downloaded FF3b4 after seeing this post, on WinXP. It's already crashed and restarted 6 times in the first half hour of surfing, and I've only surfed this site, craigslist and Yahoo Mail. Can't say I'm impressed with stability so far.
as long as stumbleupon works, im happy.
fuck you piclens and your platform dependent plugin that kicks so much ass!
I've essentially made the switch already to FF3b4 because of the tremendous improvements in memory usage. I'm running an 8 year old computer with Windows 2000 and I need every bit of memory I can get. FF3b4 runs as smooth as butter...well at least as smooth butter can get on my computer. Although, I am running the portable edition from portableapps.com so that could be the reason.
@lightningrob
That's strange...I've used it on various sites including this one, Yahoo! Mail, along with plenty of others over the week or so I've been using it and have had no trouble with crashes.
Any one else have comments on crashing issues?
@dagamer34: I work for a company that provides online media serving and in my experience, Safari is the most compatible and versatile of the 3 major browsers. Generally the majority of issues we see come from IE with Firefox pulling up a distant second. I rarely see issues with Safari not playing well with our products (Flash animations and video). I work with this stuff all day long and I use Safari for my personal web browsing but it's nice to see the new version of Firefox coming along.
..so has Mozilla finally fixed FF's nagging memory leaks?
Yesterday I was playing a flash game with youtube running in the background and my mem. usage shot up to 650k! That's not a typo! I live you Firefox, but sometimes you can be a bitch...
@nutbastard: Piclens is quite the sexy beast. Damn that whore
Ew at that address bar. I surely hope I can keep the way mine looks now...
The only problem I've had with it is with .mac web sites. It doesn't render the photographs. Other than that, it's pretty slick.
Still don't have my favorite theme for me. I guess I'll see if my Portable FF 3.0B4 will load all my extensions.
I actually don't like the new address bar feature. I navigate to a lot of my sites by typing in the first few letters of the address. Now that it searches from the entire address and not just the first it's completely thrown off my groove. So until I find a way to disable it, I will be sticking with firefox 2.
Can you run v3 alongside v2? I need to for development & testing.
Some of us are wayyyy too smart to grab version 1.0 of anything.
Sincerely, Your Mom.
OK, that's Gmail manager, CoComment, Google Browser Sync and Tab Mix Pro that currently don't work. And some things the little box couldn't find, the full search did show me working extensions. YMMV.
@zombo: Go to portableapps.org and download Portable FireFox 3. You will need to modify and move a configuration file, (otherwise 3.0 freaks out if you are already running FF 2.0). That's how I used 3.0 to load what extensions I could. Now I have to restart.
@infmom: This is 3.0, not 1.0!
@Bryan Price: thanks--that looks great. Know of anything similar on OS X?
boooooo fatfox
@Out2gtcha: You need IE Tab. It'll let you use Internet Explorer within a Firefox tab, so you don't have to sacrifice a good browsing experience for platform-specific applications. I use it for my company's IE-only software all the time.
Been using it since beta 3 completely since beta 3, but tried it a little since 2.
I've only experienced one problem, a text cursor line shows up in random parts of pages from time to time. Other than that it's been perfect.
@FranklinTurtle:
Minus the first "since beta 3"
I think I'll wait some more... since FF2 is everything I need right now.
But I'm curious to some details: FF3 is using less RAM? Plugins... FF2 plugins are compatible?
My laptop went to the grave, and I'm back to my old one... 10+ tabs on FF2 and it starts to lag.
Yeah, that's pretty much it.
i like it for the most part... but today i tried printing a boarding pass from US Airways.com and it just didn't work at all....wtf...how did they manage to break printing a normal ticket which is text and image
Gona let yous guys feels it out a bit. Fo now Ima stikin wit FF 2.0
It's a really amazing browser! Much better than both FF2 and IE7. I've been using Beta 4 on Vista since it came out and am really enjoying the ride. There's a real dramatic drop in RAM usage, especially considering its predecessor and IE7.
Great job Mozilla! You surprised us yet again!
Ofcourse i kid!!! Firefox beats IE's ass any given day!!
looks like i ended up bein the troll today :P
Cheers you guys! cant wait to install FF3 tonight!
@gibson042:
Nice!
Thanks for the heads up.
I'm in no way against using FF, as it is just app specific issues I have been running into.
I tried the FF3beta4 for a week but had a frustrating time. FF2 never crashes on this desktop, but ff3.4 crashed 8 or 9 times a day for some reason. I did like the new interface/navigation bar at first but found it got annoying after a couple of days use. And the lack of support for my most used plug-ins was the nail in the coffin. I did mention this stuff to Mozilla so hopefully they will update with fixes. Until then, I have no issues whatsoever with FF2 so I've gone back to it. No crashes since.
@All of you bitching about the plug-in compatibility issues,
Soon after I started using the FF3.0 nightlies I discovered a wonderful extension called nightly tester tools, look it up at [addons.mozilla.org] it disables maxversion checking for extensions (some of my extensions are designed for Fx 2.0, but with NTT they run fine in Minefield). Also iirc it adds some other random useful crap like screenshots.
Download Safari instead!! It is a lot better! and free.
