Latest iPhone 2.0 Firmware Unlocked Again in 24 Hours

The iPhone Dev Team has demonstrated that Apple will probably have a very difficult time patching the iPhone to thwart their efforts: not even 24 hours after the release of the latest update for the iPhone firmware 1.2.0 (or 2.0, as The Steve calls it,) they sent us this picture showing that they have pwned it again, getting it to work completely unlocked, and run all applications. As they told us: "Apple will not really be able to patch it this time." Check the new Contacts application, which was in the Touch and seems to have been revealed in this latest revision. More pictures after the jump.

  • Yay, hackers!

And, I think before I'd take pictures of my iPhone, I'd at least wipe it off or something. That's a very smudge-ridden iPhone.

  • can you get any cleverer than Dev Team? These guys just keep getting better and better each time!

  • apple fanboys need to get a life.
(yes. The "dev team" members are THE biggest fanboys in the history of fanboyism)

  • These guys are my Heros!

  • Given that Apple has now handed the keys to the car (so to speak), at what point does hacking the iPhone become irrelevant? I could understand this in the beginning when Apple was not allowing anyone to create their own applications, but now they are. So, does this end when the fruits of the SDK start to be ripe, or will the joys of hacking the iPhone never end?

Regardless, I never met a hack I didn't like. Keep up the good work, Dev Team!

    @Monty: The point is:

    1. This allows you to run your iphone on any compatible network.
    2. This allows you to run ANY application, unsigned, not from iTunes. SDK apps are limited by certain Apple guidelines.

This hack will allow you to have COMPLETE freedom. That's why it is EXTREMELY good news that Apple is going to have a very hard time limiting the hackers. So far, so good.

  • I'm not saying this isn't completely real but if it is what happened to the app store?

  • I have that contacts icon on my phone now. It showed up after installing Poof then uninstalling it. Is that not normal. I figured it was a hidden icon for some reason.

  • @ gamecrazychris: He probably was playing with the parental controls and hid them. ;) iTunes store is also hidden as well. :p

  • @chasema: I think we could even lift up a fingerprint just from these photos.

  • Ew. Thems be some nasty smudges on that there phone.

  • i think the hackers should replace the Dev Team.. lol.. go hackers!

  • @Monty: "Given that Apple has now handed the keys to the car (so to speak), at what point does hacking the iPhone become irrelevant?"

If Apple actually handed over the keys, you are right that hacking the iPhone would become irrelevant. But, the keys they'll be giving us in June will only allow those apps blessed by Apple to run, they will be charging developers to host those apps and are still quite restrictive in terms of the iPhone functionality that developers will be allowed to access.

Rogue Amoeba, for example, would like to write and app enabling Airtunes broadcast and reception for the iPhone/Touch, but Apple's development restrictions will apparently prevent this.

  • @Monty: The main point of all this is for the people who live in countries outside those with whom Apple has a deal. The biggest city in Canada is less than an hour from Buffalo, NY and so it is easy to get the phone, but impossible to get Apple-approved service.

Morever, if you're an American who travels, it seems silly to pay the huge roaming charges when you can pick up a SIM card in most European countries and pay local rates. Throw in call forwarding from your home number and you're golden.

  • Why is the version 2.0 instead of 1.2.0 like it's supposed to be?

And clean the damn phone if you're gonna post pictures of it on the 'net... damn :P

And where is the iTunes store and the Apps store?

    Lame.

  • LOL, why would they even waste time with 1.2.0 if they know it's only a beta version and that by the time the final 2.0 is release the current beta version might get update more than 10x, i mean this is great but it makes no sense.

  • "he who laughs last, laughs best."

i get the feeling apple is literally making the hackers play their cards so when Apple is ready to release the final version of this hardware, it'll be much harder to crack

  • @snitch29: I think they're just trying to prove that they can bypass every single update that Apple's made.

  • @Jesus Diaz: I had not considered the desire to avoid AT&T. In that case, it makes sense that the hacks will continue for as long as the iPhone is limited to a single carrier.

    Hack on!

  • I wonder how hard Apple are actually trying to stop the hacking?

  • The contacts app isn't new, its been around since the iPod touch came out, just hidden. Just goes to show how incredibly accurate the reporting around the iPhone always is.

    *rolls eyes*

  • The hacks on the iPhone are the only reason I bought it. The extra apps they provide, like a wonderful todo list, make this a true smartphone.

Without the hacks, this is just a big feature phone, of course it does have the coolest mobile browser ever...

  • o2 de, nice, some germans at work, o2 is the best network anyways, they should have gotten the iphone in the first place

  • OK, but how its gonna work when apple starts app store. I think there will be some application that will recognize you have hacked phone...

  • Image of Jesus Diaz Jesus Diaz at 01:00 PM on 03/29/08 *

@ars_workerbee: Of course the app is not new. It has been in the Touch since the beginning. The thing is that it's seems to have been revealed for access in the latest upgrade. As far as for the accuracy of our iPhone coverage, what can I say.

  • @mclark2112: Well yeah 2.0 will be for free, but I guess one time you'll hack your phone, you'll be unable to download any app from iTunes app store

  • hold on-when did iPhone 2.0 get released? I'm confused.

  • Image of frigg frigg at 01:17 PM on 03/29/08 *

@Monty: Jailbreaking and the SDK aren't mutually exclusive, but according to überbreaker Nate True, "the vast majority of developers will move to the SDK."

  • Does anyone see the irony of this statement?

apple fanboys need to get a life.
(yes. The "dev team" members are THE biggest fanboys in the history of fanboyism)

  • Any thoughts other than the distressingly kool-aid laced fan commentary on why Apple can't lock this UI down? I mean, I'm all for the hacks and yet, at the same time, I wonder how Apple has been so impotent in stopping them from being unlocked.

  • @lianna_g: never underestimate the power of hackers/fanboys; or just people who have nothing better to do :)

  • Why don't Apple just at least say that they're implementing a security measure, leave the damn thing wide open - ok, as open as it seems to be to the hackers - and just save the money for developing things on the iPhone that people really want instead of trying to limit it's functionality.

  • @izim1: Well i think they're more fanboys of violating the Mac's OS's
    Proof right here [gizmodo.com]
Truth is i dont think any OS is safe any more. No matter "unhackable it is" there will always be someway it could be changed in some way shape or form. Even if its a lighter version or something of the sort.

  • Will this work for the Touch or just the iPhone? If so where can I get it?

  • erm, clifton, iPod Touch has no phone capabilities... the whole point of UNLOCKING is to use other carriers aside from AT&T..

  • Symantec, McAfee and Trend Micro should be ecstatic! With the way developers are tearing this device apart, it's only a matter of time before the same types of viruses that plague windows operating system end up on the iPhone. Anti-virus companies could clean up!

  • Image of Jesus Diaz Jesus Diaz at 05:24 PM on 03/29/08 *

    @Joseph: Why?

  • They give you a cloth in the box for a reason. >_<

  • If people want to buy an iPhone and hack it i'm fine with that, but these guys are crooks. To get access to the unreleased firmware they either had to sign an NDA which they have broken or they got access to it illegally. Its one thing to play with the device, its another to break the law :/

  • Image of Jesus Diaz Jesus Diaz at 06:45 PM on 03/29/08 *

@krizoitz: Wait, you are ok about people hacking the firmware that comes in the iPhones but you are not ok about people hacking the firmware they got with their SDK?

If in both cases they don't distribute the firmware, where's the crime again?

  • @illutionz:

I know that, what I meant is there a program to hack the firmware for the touch like the did with the iPhone so I could run any app. I would rather do that then jailbreak it

  • @chasema:
Maybe the smudge was left ON to show it;s not fake...:)

  • Are you kidding me? A crime?

    I LOVE THESE GUYS!

    Go Dev Team!

  • I view this as an exercise, and have no interest in hacking my phone, and I dont care if others do. Still, poor apple. Cant keep their firmware secure.

    congrats to the dev team!

@izim1: Yeah, any developer that bothers to invest time in a very popular product is a fanboy, right?

  • I'm not up to speed on the whole iPhone hacking deal, but don't you risk having your iPhone "bricked" all the time??

  • I think these guys are great. I'm sick of all this "waah, you're stealing Intellectual Property" garbage; grow up. This guy wasn't stealing revenue, he wasn't selling the stuff, he was asking for donations for his development for drivers he was giving out for free. Creative needs to get their business model up to date and realize that if someone isn't harming you, then let it go. You'll look way better if you promote their work, rather than threaten them... look at all the negative PR they've gotten, even just from here. I'm boycotting until I see a public apology.

  • Comment on Latest iPhone 2.0 Firmware Unlocked Again in 24 Hours The contacts app isnt new, some times when you jailbreak/unlock your iphone, it has this, "im an Itouch" identity crisis. im not sure how it ends up their, when using poof, i realized that the program was installed but this is back in firmware 1.1.3, it was also hidden. still contacts isnt anything worth drooling over, its just stupid, i rather have all my phone functions in one button, not two
