Ugh!
Hey people, simple fix for this nonsense...
Rubber tipped Drumsticks!
Mine are made by Xymox. Not only do they reduce the sound without having to mess with your drums, but they also give better bounce and help with your playing.
Xymox "Dead Beats" is what you want.
As someone who lives in a college dorm room, I definetely can attest to the annoying ability of these drums from down the hall. I've heard its worse if you live below them though: the guys ended up putting a blanket or something under the drums to try and dampen that effect
Wouldn't the crocheted surfaces interfere with your ability to get the necessary bounce back with sticks?
A guy on ebay sells rubber ones that dampen the sound AND help the sticks bounce for real drum rolls. These suck.
Wouldn't the heads of the sticks get caught in the material as well?

@vagrant: if you're using crochet needles or stabbing the drums then i'd assume so.
Or I could pay 10 Bucks for something that looks way better and probably works better.
Friend of mine has a toddler that sleeps light, so his solution was to create a set of sound dampeners using felt and some thin rubber pads. You can pick up the supplies at pretty much any place that has a fabric section, for pennies on the dollar (ok, maybe dimes.)
The sound isn't completely muffled - it basically takes most of the sharp "clacking" away - but it reduces the noise factor enough so his kid can stay asleep. Added bonuses - the entire felt pad is colored (instead of just the ring) and the rubber base maintains that vital stick-rebound.
Hm. Drum cozies.
What will they think of next?
Also, inb4 DS cozies.
Picture a production sweatshop in Asia filled with grannies.
Did anyone think wow... lil jamaican weed heads buried underneath their humongous rasta hats?
Heh heh. Funny - it's definitely original, although one would think it might interfere with drumming. I am using the pads from [www.DrumPads4RockBand.com]
the guy who posted the first comment is right, id ratehre have rubber tipped sticks!
What you all are forgetting is that these SWEET cozies are made with *love* in Long Beach, CA by a 27 year old girl...not a sweat shop in Asia filled with grannies. Thanks for the post! Come get yours here: FunkieFresh.Etsy.Com
