Lightning Review: Rock Band Stand Keeps Your Guitars, Controllers and Mics in Check

The Gadget: A wooden stand that keeps your Rock Band and Guitar Hero guitars, mic, and various controllers in check so they don't otherwise destroy your living room in a mass of plastic and cabling.

The Price: $55 for the standard stand, plus $10 extra if you want extra microphone holder holes.

The Verdict: It works! Propping up your guitars against this thing is much classier than leaning them against walls, cabinets, chairs, dogs or ottomans. There's even two sets of hooks on either side so you can wrap your cables around them for even more neatness.

The unit comes unassembled, but the instructions are pretty clear and only required about 10-15 minutes (with an electric screwdriver) for all the screwing. The only complaint we have with the design is that the middle support rod is a rod, and thus round, and makes it hard for uncoordinated people like us to screw in everything straight. Not a huge deal, but ours ended up crooked.

The creators say that new versions of this thing will be not only sanded, but have a polyurethane coat to make everything smooth and pleasing to the touch. If you're a frequent Rock Band player that's tired of either hiding your gear after a session or just leaving it out in a mess, this is $55 well spent. On a related note, they're also working on a Rock Band Drum Stand that will hold your drums as well as two guitars, which is the only thing missing from this current setup. [Dude Thing Creations]

  • ok... I play REAL guitar, which in all honesty actually DOES help with the ladies. I also play Guitar Hero. It's hard enough to cancel out the plastic controllers in my living room with the REAL guitar in my living room. There is no way at all that I would ever get laid again if I had to justify a freakin' STAND for my plastic guitars...

  • they need one more tier, for the drum set...

@Tayng: Way to go with the reading of the post all the way through.

  • @MasterYong: I love it when some one starts playing a song on guitar hero, and I play along on real guitar...

    makes me giddy.

  • @Jason Chen: Oh gezz, my bad, don't ban me please :\

  • Yeah, having this in your living room would effectively kill any street cred you might have had. If you had none to start with, then go for it!

Or, for the cheap of heart, how about a drawer? Shove it into your entertainment center? Or even in the closet when it's not being used?

  • If this held drums + two guitars, I'd probably buy it instantly. Throwing the plastic into the closet only makes it messy.

Also, @MasterYong: I don't think this is designed to be used as a way to show off your plastic ukuleles, but more a way to hide them while keeping them organized. Also, GH is pretty damned mainstream now, it's moved well past the niche game it used to be.

  • @Jason Chen: HEY! Don't go chasing away us short-attention-spanners. I'm pretty sure that we're a key demographic of your... Oh, shit - look at that nickel rolling along the floor!! HeeHee, go nickel, GO! Back to what I was saying - Real boobs are way better than fake ones. I mean, big boobs are cool, but... Hey, what's that guy on the corner doing over there? His glasses are shiny! Hey, dude! Oh, yeah, back to the subject at hand - PC's are way better, you fanboy!!

  • @MasterYong: Yeah, it might clash with your shag carpeting, your red lights, and your heart-shaped bed, huh?

  • @Tayng: do it! do it!!! hahaha...jk.... be happy! =D

  • @Munch:

    Wanna go ride bikes?

  • Wow Why would you pay $55 dollars for a stand when you can make one yourselve and..... wait, forget it I forgot that we live in a country full of lazy people.

  • yeah I second that...Sorry wrong post.

  • just me or does this give off a "Shop class project" look? Either way, it would look that neat for the first week. followed by a lifetime covered in last nights clothes.

  • @Munch: Sweet. My thoughts exactly.

Who reads an entire post all the way through?

I'll tell you who: People with too much time on their-

  • I bought some hooks in the gardening section of the hardware store that are meant for a water hose. They worked great for my RockBand and GH guitars. I also bought the carrying case for the drums, but that's a pain in the ass to break it down everytime I'm done with the them.

@Knight: I wasn't really planning on buying GH III but then my wife went to a party with a bunch of her female friends, and they all had a blast playing it together.

So, she called me on the way home and told me to go to Bestbuy and get the game and two guitars. I never really like the idea of fake guitar playing, but I have to tell you, it got my wife into gaming, so its ok in my book. Further, it is actually a lot of fun, and for someone who doesn't have the time to learn to play a real guitar and also play video games, it works out as a great internal compromise.

  • @Munch: @fumunda: Yeah, who has time to actually read posts?

I just read the headline, look at the picture, and comment away...

  • @Tayng: Totally, man. I'll be over on my Huffy around... WHOAH, check out the size of that chick's... Hey, look... A butterfly!!

  • @Knight: ahhhhhh, sooooooo... makes much more sense now. S'pose it would fit nicely in a closet...

    @HeartBurnKid: That's a ROTATING heart-shaped bed to you, buddy!

  • @kahri: It definitely looks like a shop-class project. I figure by looking at this photo and making some rough estimates as far as dimensions, most somewhat handy people could recreate this themselves. For less than $55.00. I might give it a shot.

  • I can just cut a hole in for extra mics not 10 bucks

  • @Tayng: You must be the life of the party.

"Hey you idiots look ridiculous playing your plastic guitars, let me serenade the ladies here who are obviously not having fun.

Hey. HEY! I'M LACKING ATTENTION HELLO!!!"

  • I think the Wii needs something like this for... their standard peripherals.

Storing 2 guitars (because rockband sucks) is relatively easy - you lean them against the wall.

  • @potohead1: Make? Isn't that what Mexicans and Chinese are for?

I mean - why did we sign bi-lateral trade agreements and ship all our labor jobs away ... so we can MAKE stufF?!~

  • I just bought a $9.99 guitar stand from Walmart and put it on the cabinet where I have the rest of my game controllers.

  • Hey folks, I'm one of the guys behind the product - thanks for the great response to the product!

We're very excited about the drum stand, and judging from the flood of preorders we've gotten today, so are you!

@grizgza You're corrct, you can make one of your own for less, but the same can be said for nearly anything you buy, ever.

  • kps9727@grizgza: You're corrct, you can make one of your own for less, but the same can be said for nearly anything you buy, ever.

Rizlad@kps9727: Especially if its made of plywood and dowel.

Rizlad@kps9727: Especially if its made of plywood and dowel.

  • I think this is a good investment for any Rock Band/ GH owner.

  • "Your design bar table with an umbrella rack was a major flunk, and now we have all this stock to sell... what are you gonna do now?"
"I know! Name it Guitar Hero Stand. It will sell millions!"

... and the rest you all know.

  • Hey, that 360 controller looks pretty spiffy! Is that some limited edition jumpoff I haven't heard about, or was it sent to ColorWare?

  • now if this was designed as a cabinet, with a closing door and either a shelf or pockets on said door for controllers/microphones, AND the guitar holder spun around like a lazy susan... all i am saying is that there is room for a lot of improvements besides sanding and a polyurethane coat

  • Practice real guitar, and not pretend guitar, and someday you'll be able to make stuff like this.

  • @mistercopyandpaste:

Dude, read the entire article or visit the website. You'll find that which you seek.

  • @kps9727: dude, put the bong down , let the smoke clear and re-read the article yourself, take a tour of their website and then feel free to critque my comment.

  • @mistercopyandpaste:

I'm very familiar with "their" website because it's "my" website. If you took a moment to read instead of being snide, you'd discover for yourself that the drum stand is in fact "designed as a cabinet, with a closing door and either a shelf or pockets on said door for controllers/microphones".

Actually, there are 2 closing doors, but you get the picture.

  • @deathbychichi: That singer sounded JUST like Plant in the Beginning. Ten Years Gone = One of the most underrated songs EVER!

  • Just received this stand, what a joke, it looks like someone's Jr. High School wood shop project. The whole thing is put together with silver L brackets. You can't see them in the picture because there covered up by guitars. It looks terrible. The plywood was separating, it wobbles, the thing looks like it was painted with flat black from a spray can, what more can I say. What a waste of money.

  • They just posted this on there web site. BUYERS beware. I just received this piece of crap May 8, 2008. It's still the old design.

    It's Hip To Be Square

One of the critiques that we had in the Gizmodo article about the Guitar Stand was that the center post on the Guitar Stand was round, and that made it difficult to screw the screws in straight. So we went back to the drawing board to see what we could come up with.

Before, we were using a 1 1/4 inch wooden dowel to serve as the center post. We experimented with a number of alternatives, but finally settled on taking a wooden stud (the same kind that houses are made from) and cutting it down to the correct size. We then round off the corners so it's pleasing to the touch, and paint it. So now each post has 4 flat sides into which the screws are screwed, removing the problem all together.

As an added bonus, the wood we're using is far more sturdy than the dowel we were using before, and while it takes a little longer for us to cut and prep it, we're way more satisfied with the result.

  • For the record, we offered to refund Bobsolete's purchase in accordance with the 7 day return policy for all stands that we sell.

    Also for the record -

    1) I'm open to suggestions as to what to hold it together with other than L-Brackets.

    2) Plywood sometimes (very rarely) separates, that's why we offer a refund.

    3) We use a paint system that is made from stainless steel (basically a really big air brush).

    4) We have sold over 70 stands, and only 2 customers have been unhappy, with Bobsolete being one. The other received a full refund.

  • @Bobsolete:

    Bob,

As you rightly point out, the post was made today. We finished our prototyping of the new solution this past weekend, which is why I posted the update... today. You received your stand on May 8, long before we finished prototyping. So yes, you received the old stand.

As I mentioned in our private conversation, if you'd like to return your stand, I'll be happy to provide you with a refund.

  • Great, you didn't even offer to pay for return shipping. Besides, I was so mad after seeing the quality of the product; I threw it into the trash, which was picked up today. I would have gladly sent back the splinters.
It cost me $65 and 1 hour of my time to put this thing together.

What bothers me the most about this product is the 12 fully visible silver L brackets you have to attach. Your pictures hide them.

Hey EVERYONE if pay an extra $10 they will put your order to the head of the line.

  • @kps9727:
Funny there was paint between the separated layers of plywood. Thus the wood must of been painted after the wood had already separated. Quality control ?

So, I should pay for shipping to get the product and also to return it.

  • @kps9727:
A question to the readers. Has anyone ever seen a commercially sold stand of any sort, that is held together with L brackets ? I haven't until now. It's a cheap way to make a stand, certainly more profitable for the seller.

  • Would you buy a product from someone who would write this ? (See below)

FIRST: I haven't called someone a DUDE for 20 years, who needs to grow up.

SECOND: In the pictures you hide the L -Brackets. I wonder why ?

THIRD: That no excuse, you shouldn't be selling this item then.

FORTH: Money back except $30+ dollars for shipping to and from. What a money back guarantee.

    FROM DUDE THING CREATIONS

    * (Editorial note - this question has only been asked once, but it offers a great opportunity to make some points) The stand looks like a high school shop project, I wasted my money, I hate you and I hate everything about you, I threw the stand in the trash, and will now hire a gypsy to put a hex on you and your family for generations!
o First off, grow up dude.
o Second, look at the pictures. That's what you're going to get. If you don't like the way it looks, don't buy it.
o Third, we're not professional carpenters. If you're expecting a masterpiece, you're in the wrong place. We do our best to ensure that every stand we ship is top quality, but your stand will not be flawless.
o Finally, if you don't like it after you've gotten it, send it back within 7 days (it doesn't have to get to us in 7 days, just be shipped within 7) and we'll refund your purchase price (but not the shipping).

  • I guess this is a great example of how you can't please everyone. I withdraw from this argument, it's silly.

I'm sorry you didn't like the product. Seeing as how you've done everything you can to attempt to disparage our good name, there's no amicable solution to be had.

I leave you with nothing but our metrics to speak for me:

    Stands sold: 73
    L-Brackets in the stand: 10 (not 12)
    Complaints received: 2
People who throw the product away then demand their money back: 1

  • @kps9727: Ok, I'm tired of you too. I stand corrected 10 L-Brackets not 12. I NEVER asked for my money back, DUDE. I said it looked like a Jr. High School project, not high school. Good luck, buyers beware.

  • Image of Jason Chen Jason Chen at 08:39 PM on 05/12/08 *

@Bobsolete: Bob, you've let everyone know how you feel about the stand, but it's time to take it up somewhere else. They offered you a refund, which you couldn't take advantage of because you threw yours into the trash right after you built it. You are being the unreasonable one here.
