It's alive. Reader Patrick (Whiskeyfrown) is lucky enough to be using one of the few Psystar Open Computing machines that have made it into the wild, and he was generous enough to make a video showing the machine (including the connections in the back to the monitor to show that it's legit). The thing boots up and runs pretty damn fast, says Patrick, but Software Update won't recognize it so you won't be able to patch. System Profiler thinks that it's a Mac Pro. More images coming soon. Update: Photos here!. We find out what's in the package.

So its a company that charges for the Osx86 project?
Holy Crap thats loud!!!
how do we know it's from Psystar and not just another Hackintosh?
Either way, sounds like Psystar is making Hackintoshes anyways.
No update? what's the point then.
Why would anyone buy a system you can't update????? Dude do you have any idea how many bugs are in the fix for the next update that's being release within 1 to 2 weeks???? a little hint? is in the hundreds, lol, good luck.
Dude should post his receipt, delivery notice, etc.
These bastards are some retards who are just using the OSx86 Project to make money. Apple is probably just sitting back waiting to sue the pants off them and anyone who uses there machines. This guy in the video is not very smart to record his machine running OSX when apple clearly prohibits it. The fact that you can not update the OS is proof that is a Hack, and should be avoided.
Why would someone buy this loud Crapple PC when you can buy a legal iMac for the same price. Next time, buy legal machines or build your own Hackitosh, and shut the "Bleep" up. I can see it now:
Next on Gizmodo: Apple sues the 3 Noobs who actually purchased Crapple Hacks!
lol, that's probably the dumbest thing I've ever seen, what an idiot.
As somebody already said, he paid for the OSx86 project, which is free. He might as well have done it all himself. It's NOT hard.
If the thing actually ran, 100% from boot (including boot screen) as an Apple machine, that'd be something. But it obviously doesn't.
Dumb.
Things Apple needs to get over:
1) Two button mouse. Seriously, just implement it on your laptops and new mouse. Let it go.
2) Pricing. You don't have superior hardware. You have the same CPU, GPU, HDD, RAM, DVD, screen, wireless, webcam and microphone. An aluminum case doesn't mean a $1800 17" laptop should cost $2800. And the OS has been valued at $129 and NOT $800.
3) True Dual OS. Offer Windows XP Home/Media Center/Professional as a 30/40/50 dollar upgrade for Macs and configure it such that you can choose to have XP load at start up AND NOT HAVE US BOOT OSX AND THEN XP.
4) OSX for PC. Once you've dealt with the first three things, its time to open up the OSX to PCs. Granted it'll be a hurtle making it compatible with ALL of the Intel and AMD procesor powered PCs and the nVidia and AMD video cards but its something that they really should spend their time on. Imagine the look on Microsoft's faces when they see their unhindered PC OS dominance shook by the appearance of OSX. And imagine Mac laptops and desktops that have XP and OSX realistically priced. That will be the day I buy a Mac. Until then, I'll stick with my $1800 17" laptop.
@Shawn_K: If it Psystar, it's just as you said, "another Hackintosh". The difference is that Psystar isn't getting permission from the PSx86 Project or Apple to do any of this.
Psystar probably just removed the System Updater app. My Hackintosh works with Software Update, though I do have to be selective as to what I update with it.
@TedB.: or a really bad time for the wife to start the vacuum cleaner...
In the beginning I love how he caresses the DVI cable while tracing it to the monitor.
damn can't update, that sucks.... there is no point in having a computer that cant update; that leaves you wide open to hackers...
If you like MacOs X, then buy an apple PC...but almost it looks like Psystar isn't a Hoax.
@daftrok:
Ehm, pressing the option button at boot lets you decide which OS to boot.
The rest of the rant was just fine :)
@daftrok - you're so far out of touch, it's actually humorous!
Do some research.
The default configuration of one of these Psystar computers, once you add the Leopard OS, comes out to not even $200 cheaper than a Mac mini, and with only marginally better specs.
If it was my money, I'd go the extra $200 and end up with a smaller, much quieter (that thing is stupidly loud), better looking computer that I could update.
But that's just me.
Holy Crap Dude, Daftrok, you need to step back and re-examine your accusations.
1. I'd agree with that, I think that they could use 2 mouse buttons, however, the 1 mouse button is what sets Apple apart. There is nothing wrong with that.
2. Yes Macs are pricey, however, you are paying a premium for something that just works when you need it. Yes Mac has the spinning wheel of death, but it's a heck of a lot prettier that the ugly Blue Screen of Death.
3. Apple cannot offer a 30/40/50 dollar upgrade to their macs for XP/Vista because XP/Vista is produced by Microsoft. Microsoft and Apple are two different companies that are competing against each other for the greater market share.
Guess what? You can have XP load at startup. It's called Boot Camp, and if you had taken the time to research some of your accusations, you would have noticed that Apple has provided the possibility of Dual-Booting. However, what you are talking about is a mac program called "Parallels". This program allows you to use both Windows and OSX at the same time, thus allowing users to multi-task.
4. Apple at this time, probably won't open up their software to the PC market. The reason Apple is doing extremely well today is because of their beautifully designed products combined with Leopard that keep the Consumer in mind. This being said, Vista also does a very good job at keeping the consumer in mind, however, Leopard's approach at said task, seems to be more viable in the ever-changing market and age brackets.
All in all
1. You're Right
2. You're paying a premium for Awesomeness
3. You're Wrong
4. Wishful Thinking, but good try.
@daftrok:
1) Mac desktops technically have two button mice, but anyone who's actually going to use a Mac is going to get another mouse anyway, because the might mouse scroll wheel is crap.
2) Pricing probably could come down some. Refurb still do wonders regardless.
3) "Upgrade" pricing requires you have a full OS of Windows to work from. Combined with point two, it sounds like you want Apple to charge more for something you could easily do yourself?
4) Drivers and shit are the very reason why Windows is a hell of a lot more complicated than OS X in the first place. It's what Linux users have to deal with all the time. Granted, if manufacturers DO provide quality drivers, you are ok, but because of the billion plus interactions the hardware has with the kernel, lots of stuff can fail anyway.
By the way, your $1800 probably doesn't get 6 hours of battery life.
@daftrok:
One thing you need to get over. Yourself.
(1) Two button mice: seriously, if you can't use OSX comfortably on a Macbook, which only has one button, but the multi-touch trackpad makes up for it, then you just shouldn't even consider a Mac. Don't even come looking in Mac related threads.
(2) Which name brand PC maker has the spec-for-spec equivalent (and that includes ports, weight, size, battery life, etc., not just components) of the 17in MBP for $1800? Not saying it doesn't exist, just need to see it before an argument can be made against it.
However, the more important question is, are there no other name brand PC makers out there that charge the same, or even higher prices for a spec-for-spec equivalent? If so, why the fuck aren't you bitching about them?
(3) "Windows XP Home/Media Center/Professional as a 30/40/50 dollar upgrade"
In Mac-land, I believe that's called a "downgrade." Regardless, why would Apple want to subsidize your copy of Windows? Go buy your own retail package, and use it with Bootcamp. You do NOT have to boot into OSX to use Windows.
(4) "Until then, I'll stick with my $1800 17" laptop."
Really, you should just stick with your PC laptop.
@daftrok, here's the deal.
1.Every mac that ships, including the laptops has a two button mouse. Either one of the Mighty Mice, or via a system preference on laptops that makes using two fingers to tap a right click.
2. Yes, they are more expensive, but so is an escort, and she'll brush her teeth.
3. Windows doesn't bundle an iPod with it's software, why on earth should apple bundle windows with it's hardware? They aren't a hardware manufacturer, they are a consumer electronics manufacturer.
3.a And it's not like bootcamp doesn't make it DEAD SIMPLE to have a dual booting OS.
4. And for the love of all that is Jobs, CONTROL THE SPICE (Hardware) and You control the motherfucking universe. By having a direct hand in the hardware that there software runs on, Apple can actually create a consistent (and sexy) experience.
But, then again-I'm just a fanboy.
@himself
damn, glad I'm not the only one.
lol what a waste of money
Software Update won't recognize it so you won't be able to patch.
Go ahead, live dangerously. Download a combo updater, see what happens...
@daftrok
I'd choose my single trackpad button with two-fingered clicking and scrolling on my MacBook over the 4 awkward trackpad buttons on my HP laptop any day of the week.
Trackpad different.
@daftrok:
1) The Mighty Mouse is technically a 4 button mouse, programmable (limited to a specific list of functions), out of the box. The trackpad on every notebook does primary and secondary click, too. It's implementation is more use-friendly than any PC notebook I've used that uses two individual buttons. Two fingers on the trackpad, click, done. No contortion, and it doesn't matter how fat your fingers are, it works. Did I mention how well the scrolling and gestures work?
- DO YOUR RESEARCH
2) The pricing could come down a little, but compared to a PC where I've got port conflicts, and general hardware problems from things not talking to each other properly, and the fact I can go buy a Mac that doesn't suffer these issues due to the manufacturer only needing to provide OS support for machines they've configured, I'm happy to pay a little more and get something that works, as well as use Mac software, which also just works. Factor software, and long term cost of ownership of any PC to a general user (not someone who is a tech head, I'm talking your everyday user) and the Mac is a bargain.
3) Apple does offer true dual OS. As others have mentioned, you obviously like to rant before you research.
4) As others and myself have made light of, the situation of an OS having to support a billion different devices or configurations, versus an OS running rightly integrated to the specific hardware configuration is one of the big differences between a Mac and a PC. The day Apple release the Mac OS to the PC world is the day I stillll buy Apple configured hardware, as it will be better supported than having to rely on vendors writing drivers correctly.
Geez.... I don't only use mac because of the Os... it's the whole package. If I wanted to use a piece of crap machine and buy a cheap ass dell and call it a day.
I actually think that it's not a real Psystar machine, just a custom built computer with OSX86 running on it. Many people build these with perfect "Mac" specs so it will run perfectly with no errors
shoelessone: As somebody already said, he paid for the OSx86 project, which is free. He might as well have done it all himself. It's NOT hard.
Unless you're looking at an invoice that specifically lists it, how do you know that they charged anything for OSx86?
Perhaps they only charged for the hardware and an install fee.
/when you buy a computer preloaded with linux or unbuntu, is there a charge for the OS. IR is it just hardware and an install fee.
@Evan R.Thompson: I love the Control The Spice quote. Well done! *salutes*
@daftrok
yeah, and don't piss off the fanboys!
I think it's great Pystar has the balls to sell these, but I would never buy one.
I'm sorry, but to all the lippy bitches who are touting how easy it is to install a PC with OSx86, well it's also not hard to lose that bitch attitude of unearned elitism. Can we assume that some folks may have a piece of hardware that doesn't have fully functional (any) drivers yet?
fake, when he came up to press the power button, someone behind switched the monitor cable.
sooo....is Psystar using parts from Shopvacs?....cuz if not, then they must be using jet turbines to cool this thing...or then again maybe Patrick's wife just happens to be vacuuming in the next room....
@daftrok: I'm not sure if anyone has pointed this out, but I will anyway, it's called the option key dumbass. Hold it down after you turn it on.
baaad baaaad baaad baaad ugly baaad ugly baaaad bios...
The POOR + LAZY man's Mac. There's definitely a market for that.
@lordargent:
You pay for a Leopard copy so that it looks legit, but they are still using the OSx86 project.
Thats also the reason why you cant do your own reinstall of the system.
And i bet that Apple is just now waiting until they get their machine and then sue the hell out of those guys for exactly this.
@AlanIn4D: You know, that may be why there is that noise in the background, to cover for the noise made by moving the monitor cable to a laptop.
@daftrok: come on man, tell me, you said those things on purpose to get a response? look at how quickly you were shot down? surly no body is that stupid. you were joking right?
before watching the video i was thinking everyone in the comments were being overly harsh concerning the noise...
but really. WTF? G5 Xserves are quieter than that. and G5 Xserves are ridiculously laughably loud and meant for a server room.
You hear that? I would definitely not buy something that loud. Forget it. Not to mention software update doesn't work, ouch!
hah. sounds like a vacuum.
@Dearhaw:
Seriously, why are there so many defensive fanboys on this website? Psychologically, is it to stoke that sense of belonging to a group that considers itself elite to simple "PC guys"?
I'll stick with my PC laptop, thanks very much... it's a Dell by the way.
The only other place I've seen sniveling defensiveness and snooty behavior was at the local track when the Ferrari guys came out to show us Subaru guys a thing or two. We still cleaned up 1st to 12th place.
ooh boy. that is loud.
this is pathetic! if one can't afford to buy a proper mac with state-of-art design, then stick to your old useless pc and work hard to buy a mac pro.
one thing anyone shall never buy is this sort of illegal stuff, similar to smoking cannabis or buying a fake chinese iphone and show to your friends, you'll just be laughed at!
How hard would it be to be Phystar as a crooked enterprise, looking to scam some folks out of some dough.
They at Phystar came up with a scheme but quickly realized it had touched upon a touchy subject, ha, one that has people taking pictures of residences and businesses.
Decide there may be something to this after all of the publicity, saw dollar signs but needed make the scheme even more elaborate.
And have to.... on the fly, put this piece of crap together!! Which is just a modified noisy mother in which a high school kid could have built, being that the technology was already there.
Until I see the review of one in Computer World and tinker with one at BestBuy, I am not going to believe a video, sent in by whom??, showing what??
Really folks, what have you seen, what have you heard? What?
Review the Phystar articles going back on this site and you will see, overseas credit card charges at $9.99 each 40 something odd times. WHEN have you EVER heard of such crap out of a reputable company here in the US??
This is so shady that I cannot believe people are giving this company personal information!!
@daftrok: 1 and 2 yes, 3 i'm just going to ignore and 4 just doesn't make any sense (why would anyone continue to buy mac hardware then?).
I knew some Mac guys would get pissed. I'm just telling it like it is and some people don't like it. They are defending their purchase, which is understandable. So I shall defend my responses.
1) I meant a DEFINITIVE second button. Yes there is secondary click which is effective, but then again so is single click also on the trackpad. So why have a button in the first place? Mainly its familiarity. Some people like the definitive click and sometimes it is preferred, like if you are using the trackpad to move along and don't feel like lifting your fingers from it just to right click. Small things like that. And the Mighty Mouse SUUUCCCKS because it just feels like one giant button and isn't as responsive as a TRUE two button mouse.
2) This is where the fun begins:
Challenging Macbook: HP Pavilion dv2700t. The only difference is that it has a 14.1" screen instead of 13.3", it weighs 0.29 lbs more and less than 1/2 inch bigger in L,W and D. You can customize it with 2.4 GHz CPU, 3 GB DD2 RAM, X3100 GPU, 802.11 a/b/g/n, Bluetooth, webcam, microphone, 120 GB HDD, 8X DVD Burner, and a 12 cell battery giving it 7 hours battery life, and its price is $1083.99. If you want a 160 GB HDD, add 25 bucks. If you want 250 GB DD, add 75 bucks.
Challenging Macbook Air: ...HAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Challenging Macbook Pro 15": Dell XPS M1530. Same specifications as $2499 MBP 15" but with 256 MB 8600M GT so to compensate the M1530 has 3 GB RAM. Price: $2013.
Challenging Macbook Pro 17": Dell Inspiron 1720. Same specs but with 256 MB 8600M GT so to compensate the 1720 has 3 GB RAM. Also has 1080p screen. Price: $1638.
To be fair none of these have Firewire ports.
3) No, on a Mac you cannot have the option to when you push the ON button it loads Windows. You HAVE to load Mac OSX first and THEN load Windows XP. Also the reason why people want XP is so that they can run the programs Mac can't (especially games). And having that option for cheap on Macs bridges the gap. Why get a PC when you can run Windows AND Mac OSX on a Mac for similar prices (hopefully).
4) OSX for PCs as a legal option and being able to choose that when customizing an HP/Dell/whatever computer. Hell would freeze over. Pigs will fly. Microsoft will finally be challenged in the OS market. And that will be the day I buy a Mac.
send in the clones!
@Migo: Seriously, why are there so many defensive fanboys on this website?
And just as seriously, why limit your criticism to one side? I've seen plenty of boring, irrelevant comments from both sides of the fence, the cumulative effect of which is to limit my reading pleasure.
Attack if you must, gang, but please try to make it interesting. We already know the stereotypes both ways.
@Kevin: i'll laugh at you now for wearing your tin foil hat and you can laught at me later when you're right. deal?
@daftrok : you are completely wrong
on :3) No, on a Mac you cannot have the option to when you push the ON button it loads Windows. You HAVE to load Mac OSX first and THEN load Windows XP. All you have to do, if you have bootcamp installed is hold the option key.. then you can boot into windows..
Seriously, if you're going to post, either get a brain, or do the research.. You just make yourself sounds like an idiot...
@Migo:
Seriously, why are there so many offensive asshole Apple haters on this website? Psychologically, is it to stoke that sense of belonging to a group that considers itself better than the "other" group for no other reasons than those that they deem important, but are too insecure to believe in themselves so they seek to legitimate their choices by bashing the other group and soliciting fellow supporters?
The only place I've seen such foaming offensiveness and asshat behavior was... well, about every other goddamn blog/message board/newsgroup/etc., where Apple/PC/MS fanboys duel it out.
"I'll stick with my PC laptop, thanks very much... it's a Dell by the way."
Good. And I'll stick with my Macbook. It's an Apple, btw.
See, that was simple, wasn't it? You keep your hands on your dick, I'll keep my hands on mine. As long as you don't try to touch my dick, I'm fine with you, even if you're into that shit.
