Beijing Olympians can count on being cool as cucumbers in Nike's PreCool Vest, a specially designed piece of clothing that lowers the body's core temperature. Much like computers, muscles perform better when they're not dedicating most of their resources to cooling down. Used about an hour prior to a competition, it can help an athlete last up to 21% longer out in the field. The vest is made of two layers of material: the inner one is filled with frozen water and the outer layer is coated with aluminum to act like a thermos, trapping cold in while reflecting radiant heat. Unfortunately, the PreCool is only available for Olympic athletes, so us normal folk will have to find other ways to chill out this summer. [Newlaunches.com]

looks more like riot gear to me. Great idea though
Once again I am forced to stick my underwear in the freezer overnight this summer.
Thanks for nothing, Nike.
will they hand them out to each and every athelte ? or just the selct few with nike contracts ? and wouldnt that be like doping ?
@Redwraithvienna: Definately doping. :P
Nike makes a more rudimentary version available to the public. It comes with a running singlet and then a button up jacket that goes over. You soak down the jacket, and it aids in cooling through evaporation. When its race time, you lose the jacket and just have the singlet.
Why not fill an inflatable life vest with water and wrap it in tin foil?
No - its not like doping and no they won't give them to everyone.
How about this ? Why don't we only let athletes train exactly the same amount and exactly the same way - that would level the playing field wouldn't it ?
Its called competition - the 'fairness police' need one of these vests to chill out.
Nice! I didn't know gladiator was now selling fan paraphernalia.
Yes my pretties. Soon it will be the jocks' turn to be beaten up and called a "dork". Soon.
Now if that could add a oxygen tank they be set for Beijing
I might also point out the geometric design is reminiscent of the Tibetan flag in a subliminal way...
It is like doping, same principle as the speedo suits that were in question. Until its available across the board its considered "doping".
@sfokevin: Looks more like a waffle iron.
Hrmmm, if we could harness the heat of the athletes, we could make millions of waffles. It could very well save the environment by weaning America off big waffle.
Take sheet, soak it in water, wrap sheet around body while standing in front of a fan. Save thousands. Better yet don't exercise! You only have so many heartbeats, why waste em?
hmm... looks like an unfair advantage if it works the way they say it does
I just got done doing 50 minutes of pylo and I would kill for something like this: A) because my fat ass has gotten seriously out of shape since I moved back to NJ and I'm now forced to drive instead of bike. So whatever helps me last longer when i exercise, ill take it. B) Anything that could help me sweat less since I'm now starting to flood my basement with foul odors and salty water.
@OMG! Ponies!: Yes, and thanks to Nike, they will be able to stand the beating 21% longer than before! Wow!
@OMG! Ponies!: Gooood, goooood. The time is coming. Revengencefulness will be sweet.
isn't this cheating?
"Killian, here is Subzero, now, plain zero."
I need my one of those for my pc case...
All the athletes are welcome to cool down if they choose, and this would seem to be of limited value, unless you're in an endurance sport in hot weather. It does no good for a pole vaulter, or 100 meter dasher, to be able to vault or dash 21% longer. Higher or faster, yes. Longer, no.
@blitzkrieg999: Shhhh don't let the secret out. Also you can do the same with water wings and wear them all up and down your legs and arms, paint it white and suddenly you're the stay puft marshmellow man.
you're not cool unless you surface area 'yer torso
I don't get it.
I'm a huge XC/Track guy, and I can guarantee you I run 500% better when I'm sweating pretty good before a race than if I were to be cold.
It feels so much better hitting race pace right off the line and being warm than being cold, and spending half the race trying to warm up to go.
I can tell you from my distance running POV that this thing is totally useless.
Cold muscles=easy to pull muscles
Also, no cheating here. There's not any rules that limit how hot or cold you want to be before your race, provided you're not breaking any other rules in the process.
@shenanigans61: I see where your coming from man, however I wonder if this might help me at some point. I have done about 5 marathons but I overheat too quickly, dehydrate and then my legs go out. I'm like a sponge that can't hold water. I'm not buying into this thing yet but I'd like to see if this has any sort of impact on race day.
what is that? bubble wrap? Are they shipping the athletes to China via FedEx? WTF
@shenanigans61: Yeah, but do you compete in the summer? Running through the malted Beijing air on a hot summer's day, the residue of a billion factory workers and a trillion particles of silicon and ikan kayu floating through the viscous air as your overheating muscles respire anaerobically, I think you'd appreciate every little bit of cool down you could get.
This is what the wore in Greece during the first olympics... but instead of plastic, it was goat bladders filled with river water. Look it up if you dont believe me.
so you can look like an idiot?
Comment on Nike PreCool Vest Is Heatsink For Athletes Where can I get frozen water?
@frigg: Are you kidding me?
I've run up to 15 miles at a time (yes, one run) in 85*+, and 90%+ humidity. On the other end, I've run just as far in -2* temp and 5% humidity. I think I know what I'm talking about, thank you.
All it comes down to is good hydration.
@GhostofCharlesBronson: You drink a lot of water the week leading up to, and the day of your marathons, right?
Seriously, in the 5+ hours of downtime our team can have before our race, we play water poker and any other hydrating game we can think of. You lose a hand, you chug.
We end up basically having to pee every 15 minutes leading up to our race.
Seriously, if you're hydrated well, your urine should look like water. And that takes a few hours to do, so don't think you can show up, chug a gallon of water an hour before your race, and be good. Hydrating is a day, if not longer, process.
I'd love to get one of these bad boys!!!
This jacket will make flasks so freaking 80's after I fill this jacket up with my favorite alcoholic beverage, and wear it to a concert or outdoor sporting event...I can get a straw and be refreshed, or take off the jacket, and pour the contents into a cup!
And before I get a "...but the marathoners might want it!...", let me tell you:
The marathoners want nothing to do with extra weight during their race, especially in water they can't drink, and especially in cold water that's messing with your core temp.
All they want is a small swig of water every couple miles, maybe an electrolyte gel, and they're set. Believe me. Running's gotten this far without this thing, and trust me, it'll go a lot farther if this thing stays away from distance running.
@shenanigans61: You wear it before the event, not during.
Like I said, cold muscles are easy to pull, and sure as hell aren't ready for race pace right off the gun.
Try this to understand what I'm saying. Go out in the cold for a while. I mean like 20*, no gloves, for a half an hour or more. When your hands are cold, how fast are they to move?
Do you want THAT happening to your Olympian's torsos?
right up there with the mesh t-shirt
i will take 1
Great to use if you want to blend into the walls on the Event Horizon.
@colintoal:
Well no its not doping ... since the body of the athlete doesnt get altered in any way.
BUT : If this gets approved than everybody should have access to it. This is not about training methods (which get passed around pretty quickly) this is a technological bonus to those who can afford it.
And honestly ... i wanna see the fasted guy win, and not the guy who can affoed enough tech so that he will be the fastest.
@OMG! Ponies!: Hahaha. At least they will still be cool.
Stay fit
Eat well
Die anyway

@shenanigans61: Somehow I doubt Nike failed to do testing of this. We're not getting all the information on how it's supposed to be properly used. I imagine you wear this after intensive warmups, an hour before competition, but keep doing the warmup drills while wearing the vest. Warmed up muscles that remain active won't cool down to a pre-warmup state if done this way. I seriously doubt it's meant to be used while sitting around for an hour before competition.
Living in the southwestern desert area where it stays 100 degrees for about 3 1/2 months straight, I need one of these more that the olympians. The old wet towel thing is so unfashionable...
Comment on Nike PreCool Vest is Heatsink for Athletes A study performed on cooling vests showed that cooling the body from the outside actually ADDS heat though your outer body heat sensors which are on your skin will tell you you are feeling 'cool'. The latest technology that actually DOES cool the CORE Body temperature is from AVACore.com and ThermoAthletics.com Lance Armstrong has used it and so have US Navy SEALs and Special Operations teams. It cools you from the inside out ! There is an open challenge out to Nike from ThermoAtheltics.com that individuals using the cooling vests should compare the data against using their Rapid Thermal Exchange (RTX) cooling unit and if it does not outperform the cooling vest by significant margins, ThermoAthletics will offer $1 MM to the participants. Any takers? *significant--over 65% percent more endurance than normal and also vs. cooling vest*
