Maker Faire: Remote Controlled Battleships Fighting With BB Gun Cannons

Why do I need goggles to watch R/C ships sailing in a pond? Because these replicas of WWII battleships fire C02-powered projectiles. In the video above, you can see munitions bounce off the plexi shields protecting the crowd and make splashes as they ricochet off enemy hulls. The Western Warship Combat Club is recreating Axis vs. Allies fights where each side tries to sink the other. At 1/144 scale. [Western Warship Combat Club Maker Faire]

  • I don't care what you call X and what you call Y, I'm all for watching X destroy Y. Maybe it's an XY thing?

On second thought, there are a few exceptions. When X = George Bush and Y = the economy, I'm not a big fan of watching GWB destroy the economy. It has been kind of fun watching the economy destroy George Bush, though.

  • @Munch: Comment of the day :)

  • who is the "George Bush" everyone keeps talking about?

  • @Munch: George Bush inherited a Bill Clinton recession, then 9/11 happened. If not for the Bush tax cuts, we'd have been in trouble much sooner. The economy, despite our problems (and we definitely have problems), is still relatively strong. We are not in a recession (look up the definition, I'm tired of typing it).

@shenanigans61: Yes, it was the "Comment of the Day." The most irrelevant, moronic and ill informed "Comment of the Day."

  • Image of strider_mt2k strider_mt2k at 07:17 PM on 05/03/08 *

    @shenanigans61: Agreed!
    @Munch: Nice one!

  • @ GadgetPLay: What country/time period do you live in? I doubt its the US in the present...

  • @GadgetPlay: GWB helped us avoid this recession? With a war that is in the trillions of dollars, a debt to the Chinese? and poor policies in almost all aspects of government. You stand here before us to defend the "President". Man you are as ignorant as they get!

  • @Gadgetplay. You are a douchebag. Stfu.

  • That looks like some fun battleship action. Pass the goggles.

  • @GadgetPlay: You mistake was in engaging a hippie in the first place. In modern liberal circles GWB is the cause of everything, including scurvy, Lincoln's assassination, poor Redskins draft picks, and Jellicoe's lack of aggression at the Battle of Jutland. The beauty part is, no one else has to be responsible for anything.

In any case, if these thing were to scale they should be firing at battleships a couple of Olympic pool lengths away. Now that would be impressive.

  • They actually did this back in the late 40's early 50's. The only difference is at the time they used REAL guns, like sawed off 30.06's instead of 16 inch naval guns. One guy actually managed to get himself shot (of course).
    They were radio controlled too!

  • @junyo: @GadgetPlay: Isn't willing ignorance grand?

  • @junyo: Oh yes and I bet Iraq is nothing but an illusion. Now I feel much better. Thanks!

  • Those ships must have some tiny poop decks that need a swabbing by tiny tiny homosexual navy men.

they're fucking boats people. If I had wanted to waste my time absorbing shit comments I would just venture over to engad....

screw it, not even gonna finish that train of thought

please consider 'Giz a separation of Tech and State

  • @junyo: You mean GWB didn't cause scurvy??? That's not what I heard on ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, and PMSNBC! You must be mistaken. Please read the NYT editorials and get your facts straight.

  • @SonOfMagicFact:
You'll have to tell me how it is.

    @Tohe:
I seem to recall that Iraq is one of three Middle Eastern countries with universal suffrage, and Bush is responsible for two of them. It's also the place where the US military invaded and occupied a sovereign nation for more than 5 years, setup a transitional government, held multiple elections, for less combat deaths than a bad WWII morning, or the worse couple of months of Vietnam. But the media feeds you the lines and you faithfully regurgitate them on cue, so yeah. Don't look now but Bush is in your house! He's under your bed with a hood and a copy of the Patriot Act! Boogabooga!

  • @GadgetPlay:

I dont' know about the Bill Clinton thing, however we are NOT in a recession.
The economy IS a lot better than ymany people think. The media is totally pounding it in people's heads. Growth has slowed alot, but if you look at the numbers you'll see the economy is a lot better than you think.

  • @junyo: Tell me if you're open to debate, and then we can talk. But not over the comments. Send me a private message.

  • @Tohe: "Man you are as ignorant as they get!"

    Apparently not.

  • @junyo: "You mistake was in engaging a hippie in the first place."

You're right. A very wise man once said, "Never be seen arguing with an idiot. The onlookers will not be able to tell you apart."

  • First, neat boats but I'd like to see more flames and explosions, you know "fog of war" kind of stuff..

Second, GWB has been in the office for 8 years. Every problem we have right now is because he sucks, not because he inherited anything. EIGHT YEARS! I'm only talking about the problems we have now. Like the housing forclosure collapse that is putting people out on the street while the POTUS is bailing out his rich friends with stock in Investment Banking or the failure to move forward on a National Healthcare program or the "war on terror" better known as the "blood for oil negotiations" that we are fighting in the wrong place at the wrong time in the wrong way with the wrong people for the wrong reasons.

  • @nospamsam:

Pitiful. I refer you to my last post. Why can't you people just talk about the nice boats? Give Cindy Sheehan and Harry Belefonte my regards.

  • @GadgetPlay: As much as I disagree with your politics, I must agree with your statement. This is not a politicized blog. It's a blog about, among other things, *PEW PEW PEW*. Can't we just leave it as such?

  • Battleship nerds are hilarious. Wish I was there. Was there also a mini Philadelphia experiment to add to the flavor of the day?

  • Ship comments please. I can read political blogs if I want to raise my blood pressure.

More "pew, pew, pew". Less STFU.

    Tanks!

  • this sorta thing is actually a blast to be at. i went to the championships of the IRCWCC (international radio controled warship combat club) last july and there were 50+ battleships blasting the shit outta each other. These are scaled models (somewhat accurate but most of the detail gets blown off) and they do 'sorties' which involve setting up axis/allies and then proceeding to destroy each other. Then, once one has taken enough damage, it sinks! Everything inside can take the water though and it just has to be dived for
then they haul em out, patch up the balsa wood armor, score based on the # off holes, and do it again. tons of fun

  • more fun than watchin' a turd in a punch bowl

@nospamsam: I really hate to do this, but please support your "Blood for Oil" comment.

When you can't, check this link out [skeptoid.com] to inform yourself.

  • @junyo: How arrogant can you be! I'm glad to see you are part of a defeated minority of 31% who lend their support to bush. Iraq is cost us at least $3 trillions and 4,000 of our fine men and women. If you cannot connect the dots and see how this has a direct impact in the economy then you are more desensitized than I previously thought. GWB should not only be responsible but accountable. On the other hand I should thank GWB for paving the way for our forthcoming first female or black President. I hope you enjoy this future administration as much as I've enjoyed that which departs :)

  • Someone put that gun on a remote control helicopter, pronto. Now that would be entertainment. *BZZZzzzzzzz pow pow pow* and all the neighborhood kids dive for cover.

  • @Git Em SteveDave: "but please support your "Blood for Oil" comment."

You'll have to excuse him, he was channeling Cindy Sheehan. Of course, at the same time he's accusing Bush of fighting for oil, he's blaming Bush for the high gas prices, and opposing drilling for oil anywhere in the U.S. Libs are nothing if not consistent.

  • @SonOfMagicFact: "As much as I disagree with your politics, I must agree with your statement. This is not a politicized blog. It's a blog about, among other things, *PEW PEW PEW*. Can't we just leave it as such?"

I have no problem with you or anyone else disagreeing with my politics. As for politicizing, I have been as guilty as all but one on this post. Some, like the Cuban computers post, are kind of political to start with. But I got a bit upset when the very first comment about RC Boats was twisted into a cheap shot at our president. "Comment of the Day" my ass. Your point is taken, and I will try to show more self control. But when they start it...

  • @br4nd0n: "Growth has slowed alot, but if you look at the numbers you'll see the economy is a lot better than you think."

I hope you're agreeing with me because I think we're saying the same thing.

  • @junyo:
    REAL comment of the day.
bush was a sub par president, but he is overstated in his crappyness.
    /thread.

  • They did this where I lived when I was a teenager, but they put a special 'paint' on, that that would pop with a puff of smoke when it was hit.

  • @GadgetPlay:

"Pitiful. I refer you to my last post. Why can't you people just talk about the nice boats? Give Cindy Sheehan and Harry Belefonte my regards."

Wow. So, you refer to a post saying that one shouldn't argue.. and then you follow that up with an argument.

I mean, you can cover your head and pretend that GWB's foulups didn't happen, but keep your willful ignorance at home. Don't push it on others.

I always got tired of hearing republicans say that "EVERYONE knows the economy works on a 4 or 8 year delay. The recessions and massive debt run-ups are always the fault of the Democratic president before OUR Republican president takes office!" It's a tired and false argument.

  • Image of strider_mt2k strider_mt2k at 07:46 AM on 05/04/08 *

    Remember the boats?
    Man, they're cool. peew peew!

Doctor Demento used to run a song/rap about religion and politics that would fit very nicely here, but I couldn't find it.

Either way it'll fuck up any good party.

  • Image of strider_mt2k strider_mt2k at 07:53 AM on 05/04/08 *

    Here we go...

    This thread needs this.
    Badly.

  • @SMSDHubbard: "So, you refer to a post saying that one shouldn't argue.. and then you follow that up with an argument."

You're right. The post to which I referred, advised against arguing with an idiot. I should have taken my own advice. I have learned my lesson, and will not refute your specious arguments.

  • I ofically award 2 points to rc battleships and -100 points to babbling idiots turning a tech site into a platform for political banter.

  • and yes I know it's officially I just had not had my coffee yet

  • @GadgetPlay: Can you support your claim about a Clinton-made recession? Last time I checked Clinton was the first president in quite some time to not only have a balanced budget, but ended up in the black almost every year he was in office, with the nation having some of its best, albeit temporary, health care and domestic policy fixes being crafted during his term. I'll agree that Bush gets more than he deserves in the whining and bitching department, but he is still far from a good president, much less held down by the actions of Clinton. And as for "Libs" you do realize the Republican party is impressively liberal in their stance on nearly everything, don't you? And by the way, temporary tax breaks don't do anything if the general public just wants to take the extra money and save/invest it.

  • @strider_mt2k: That was the highlight of my day.

    @GadgetPlay: Go troll somewhere else.

  • Image of Git Em SteveDave Git Em SteveDave at 12:40 PM on 05/04/08 *

@WhateverWorks: Damn, I hate to get off the topic of this thread again, but.....

So saving money doesn't do anything? Perhaps if you take the money and stick it under your mattress it doesn't. Let's say you put it in the bank. The bank now has a little more money in it which it could now give a loan to someone to start a business which will employ people and generate revenue.

    OK, let's say they
