This is a photo taken with the new iPhone 4’s backlit sensor camera. Click to see it at its original 2,592 x 1,936 resolution. Apple claims the photo is not retouched, so what can we learn from it?

Everything is set on automated. This is the EXIF data:

Aperture: 2.97

Color space: Uncalibrated

Date and time: 2010/05/07 15:14

Exposure: Auto exposure

Exposure time: 1/887

Flash: Flash did not fire, auto mode

FNumber: 2.8

Focal length: 3.85

ISO speed rating: 80

Metering mode: Spot

Sharpness: Hard

White balance: Auto

The performance under obviously optimal light is very good. The processing leans a bit to over-saturation and over-exposure, which is not a bad thing. Nikon goes for a similar image processing treatment in their cameras.

However, keep in mind that this image doesn’t confirm Apple’s claims about higher ISO and better performance under low light conditions, which is supposed to be a lot better thanks to the bigger backlit sensor. We will have to wait to see this in our review. [Apple—Thanks to our friend Angel Jiménez!]
