This View Down the World’s Biggest Wind Turbine Will Give You Vertigo

You’re peering down the main supporting tower of Siemens’ latest offshore wind turbine—which just happens to be the biggest of its kind anywhere in the world.

Each of its blades are 75 meters long—that’s the same size as the wings that allow the massive Airbus 380 to fly—while the structure itself stands 197 meters tall, from ground to blade tip. That’s almost as tall as the Met Life Tower in New York.

Once it’s built and running, somewhere out in the North Sea in Europe, it should generate 6 megawatts, enough to power 5,500 households. Consider that Siemens is planning to build 300 of ’em in the coming years, and suddenly that sounds really quite impressive. [Siemens via New Scientist]
