If you want Windows Phone 8 but are scrabbling for cash, Nokia might have the answer. It just announced its new entry-level handset, the Lumia 620, at a show in Paris—and it’s squarely targeted at the budget end of the market.
Filling the bottom end of Nokia’s WinPho 8 range—just like its predecessor, the 610, did for Windows Phone 7—its specs are cheap and cheerful, as you’d expect. It offers up a 3.8-inch 800×480 pixel TFT screen, a 1GHz dual-core Snapdragon S4 Plus processor, 512MB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage. That screen, if you’re wondering, saunters in at a rather pleasing 245 ppi—not too far off Apple’s Retina displays. Elsewhere, there’s the option of expandable storage with a microSD card, a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, a front-facing VGA camera, NFC, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 3.0. That’s it: no LTE, no gazillion-core processors, nor the other bells and whistles we often bang on about.

It’s nothing fancy then, but it doesn’t cost much either. Excluding subsidies and the like, the 620 is set to cost $250 when it launches early next year. If all you want is a phone for calls, light web browsing, email and maps, you could perhaps do a lot worse than this little guy. [Engadget]
