Stalked Glass Sponge

Alright, time to end this nonsense with a palate cleanser. Check out this stalked glass sponge, which looks like a dandelion sprouting its planting seeds. Glass sponges, also known as hexactinellids, have skeletons made of silica—the same material used to make glass. This specimen was seen near the Johnston Atoll, about 940 miles (1,512 km) west of Hawai’i.
