Aladdin Magic Vaporizer

Contrary to what the name and form factor might suggest, the Aladdin Vaporizer was not a tool to help you get high. Instead, according to one enthusiast of all things Aladdin, the device was used to make insects vanish.

Aladdin Magic Vaporizer, kills insects, with original instructions found by Bill & Treva Courter. Made by M & M Mfg. Co., Amarillo, Texas. No date. "Use the vapor method to control many annoying insects, such as flies, mosquitoes, gnats and other small flying insects." One capsule treats 1000 cubic feet.

I shudder to think what sort of gas was used in this thing, and whether or not people sat in the room while the vaporizer was at work, but if you want to own a bizarre piece of the past, the Aladdin Magic Vaporizer can be yours on Etsy for $22. [Etsy, Aladdin Knights]

I hate to say this, but every time I think about a vaporizer, I mentally get them confused with humidifiers for a minute. I had one as a kid and my parents would always load up this dish at the top with Vicks Vaporub, which, of course, I associate with vaporizing or creating vapors.

That being said, I'd love to have one of these in my parents' backyard during the summer - the flies and mosquitoes are awful to deal with.
