It’s been an offbeat year for Robin Hood-adjacent movies. Hugh Jackman’s The Death of Robin Hood put a grim spin on the outlaw’s story, but at least you could tell that was the case just by reading the title. The Uprising, starring Andrew Garfield and directed by Paul Greengrass, never says the character’s name but does take heavy inspiration from his folk-hero legacy—something that was kept largely under wraps until the film debuted its first trailer.
If the idea of Garfield in a gritty Robin Hood origin story appealed but you didn’t make it out to see it on the big screen, your chance to watch The Uprising at home is already here, just weeks after the film’s theatrical debut. Starting September 29, it will be available on digital platforms, with a physical release on 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and DVD coming November 3.
“An epic tale inspired by the true events that shaped the legend of Robin Hood,” is how the press release describes The Uprising. Garfield plays a plague-surviving ploughman who becomes “the leader of a ferocious rebellion against King Richard II. As war engulfs England, he unites the people into a powerful force, fighting for justice and survival, and showcasing the sacrifices and hardships they must face to become something greater.”
The cast also features Jamie Bell, Stephen Dillane, Tom Hollander, Cosmo Jarvis, Thomasin McKenzie, Jonny Lee Miller, Woody Norman, and Katherine Waterston.
Bonus features for the home release include several deleted scenes as well as featurettes on the cast, the production, and the film’s painstaking approach in recreating medieval England.
