There’s a story in the Post citing inside sources which claims that prices for some of the most popular singles on Apple’s iTunes Music Store may be climbing to $1.25 apiece due to pressure from the Big Five labels. The story (if it’s proper to use that word for a collection of sentences in the Post) also mentions limitations in Apple’s song usage rules (like the playlist burn drop from 10 to 7), plus talks about the non-standard album pricing as if its a new thing, which it isn’t. So who knows? If Apple does raise the price per song, it’s going to be a great blow to their momentum, especially if its only for some songs, and not others. The appeal of iTunes is its simplicity of use and pricing. I hope they don’t screw that up. Keep in mind, Jobs said only last week that the price of singles was to stay $.99, so take this with a grain of salt.
Update: Apple says the NY Post is smoking a dank rock (more or less) and the singles price will remain at $.99.
