Jason Chen:

Joel Johnson:
Good morning, Jason. Happy Purple Day.
8:16 AM ON OCT 20 2010

Jason Chen:
Yup, the Apple Store just went down.
8:45 AM ON OCT 20 2010

Jason Chen:
Oh and as always, if you have comments, here is the place to go. First off, tell us if you think there's one special announcement that's going to happen that nobody has seen coming. The surprise that is supposedly coming. What is it?!

Jason Chen:
While we're waiting, check out this fantastic Twitter app. It's like Mario meets inanity.
8:53 AM ON OCT 20 2010

Joel Johnson:
I would kill for a canonical index of every Mario reference or remix that's ever been made. It would be thousands of entries over 25 years. Well, I wouldn't kill for it. But I would jump on someone for it.

Jason Chen:
I don't always drink coffee in the morning, but when I do, it's Dos Equis.
9:01 AM ON OCT 20 2010

Jason Chen:
Someone, I think Pash from Lifehacker, raised a good point yesterday about Pandora. I don't know why, but whenever I use it, I feel like I'm just playing a game where I try to decide whether or not a song is bad enough to thumbs down so as to not waste all my thumbs downs for the hour. I don't like this game.

And for you, my friends. A hammy courtesy of Cute Overload.
9:13 AM ON OCT 20 2010

Joel Johnson:
You know, I still prefer albums or hand-picked mixes to Pandora–I'm ancient!–but I do like using it at parties and such. Once you teach it a few lessons you can get a very nice eclectic mix of music without too much novelty nor not enough variety.

Kotaku's got a lead on good Amazon deals today. First is Super Street Fighter IV for $25.

Jason Chen:
I think at that price, Buchanan would get me a copy just so he has someone new to beat.
9:18 AM ON OCT 20 2010

Joel Johnson:
I haven't even played my copy of Halo: Reach for more than, like, 30 minutes. And I still haven't beat Starcraft II single player. And I am still into Minecraft. And I want Kirby. And Civ. There is not enough time.

Jason Chen:
With Rock Band 3, Fable 3, Fallout New Vegas in the next WEEK, it's going to be ridiculous.
9:22 AM ON OCT 20 2010

Jason Chen:
Speaking of games, games on the Mac has been…frustrating. Even Steam hasn't been quite as fast to get people to port games over as you'd expect. I wonder if some kind of iOS emulation on the desktop would work for gaming. It'd at least bring a donkeyload of games to your system.
9:25 AM ON OCT 20 2010

Jason Chen:
I regret to inform you that that hammy I pasted earlier is actually a guinea pig. Apologies.
9:26 AM ON OCT 20 2010

Jason Chen:
OK, so OS X users. What's deficient about your current operating system? What features can they add in 10.7 that would make you upgrade? The ones I can think of are FaceTime integration, a better Finder, and…uh…not a whole lot else. Put your guesses here.
9:33 AM ON OCT 20 2010

Joel Johnson:
I actually have an article I'm working on about Mac gaming. The nut is basically that there need to be better drivers for OS X. Even if the hardware isn't as good as cutting edge PC hardware, the performance in OS X versus Windows 7 is nearly always embarrassingly different.

Jason Chen:
Right. Steam has to get everyone to port to OpenGL, correct?
9:37 AM ON OCT 20 2010

Jason Chen:
Also, I wonder what the new iLife changes are going to be. A better iMovie is a MUST, now that everyone is doing so much video shooting and editing.
9:40 AM ON OCT 20 2010

Joel Johnson:
I don't actually know the specifics of why OSX is crappy for gaming…yet. But I will soon!
9:42 AM ON OCT 20 2010

Joel Johnson:
And yeah, I'd love a slightly updated iMovie, especially one that syncs or plays nice or does something with the iOS version, which just isn't there yet.

Soft jazz is playing on stage. I'm not sure, historically, I equate soft jazz with lions, but that makes as much sense as anything else, I guess.
