ATI TV Wonder USB 2.0 Reviewed

Reading time 1 minute

I screwed up pretty badly a couple of weeks ago. Somebody had asked me if there was a way to play console games using their laptop as a screen, and I suggested a USB 2.0-based TV tuner, never thinking about the lag between the output to the TV and the actual output on the display (a problem similar to that of many expensive digital TVs that do pre-processing (post?) of the image, causing it to be delayed out of sync with the audio). So when I read Everything USB’s review of the ATI TV Wonder, that was pretty much the only question on my mind: could you play games on it? The answer is still sort of “no”—it’s better than most, with a fast encode that gets the delay down to around half a second or so, but for many people even that bit of lag will be enough to drive them crazy. As the processing hardware gets faster, this should become a non-issue, but for now it’s an important thing to note, I think.

Oh, and it’s good for recording TV, too, I’ve heard.
