Now that it’s got Warner Bros.’ catalog to play with, one of Skydance’s first plans is to get Barbie 2 off the ground.
You may recall earlier this summer a report claiming WB wanted to get a sequel going. The studio had spent months with writer/director Greta Gerwig and leads Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, with then-head David Zaslav calling proposed offers “too generous.” If things didn’t reach a conclusion by this December, the rights would revert back to Mattel, leaving the billion-dollar 2023 hit a one-and-done.
But since Skydance is in need of movies to make and likes making crowd-pleasers, Barbie 2 may indeed happen. Sources speaking to Variety claim moves are being made to ensure a follow up is underway, helped by ex-Mattel CEO Ynon Kriez operating as co-CEO of this new company. This, however, is just a brief mention the outlet’s story, so at time of writing, it’s unknown how negotiations have fared with Gerwig, Gosling, or Robbie.
Either way, it’ll be a while before this film happens; Gosling recently booked Ghost Rider for Marvel, Gerwig’s directing Chronicles of Narnia for Netflix, and Robbie is co-starring in the next Ocean’s movie. But should Skydance get its way again, it may not be too long before it’s once again Barbie’s world.
