Let’s begin this HostGator review for 2026 with an analysis of its plans. This hosting provider offers multiple hosting variants, including:

• Web (shared) – starts at $3.75/mo
• WordPress – starts at $4.50/mo
• eCommerce – starts at $9.95/mo
• Dedicated – starts at $141.19/mo
• VPS – starts at $34.99/mo
• Reseller – starts at $34.99/mo

The variety isn’t lacking and each type of hosting offers a couple of tier-based plans to pick from. Moreover, their starting prices are pretty affordable, especially when talking about the basic web hosting offer, which begins at $3.75/mo. It’s not the cheapest, though.

Hostinger, a much better pick, starts at $2.99/mo in comparison. Simultaneously, it’s the best option overall and one of the least expensive web hosting providers.

Hosting Plans Features

In this part of our HostGator review, we’ll examine each type of hosting and analyze its features and limits.

Web Hosting

As said, you can start with the Hatchling plan at $3.75/mo or upgrade to the Baby plan at $4.50/mo. However, the provider even offers the Business plan, which, at $6.25/mo, is pretty affordable considering it’s the highest-tier web hosting plan.

The Hatchling plan already includes:

• 10 websites
• 10 GB of SSD storage
• Unlimited bandwidth
• Pro email free trial
• Free domain for a year
• Free SSL
• WordPress pre-installed
• Malware scanning

This plan is enough for most but we’d rather pick the Baby plan. This one doubles the number of websites and storage, while also including Cloudflare CDN and better performance. The Business plan bumps up your websites to 50 and offers 50 GB of storage.

We don’t like that HostGator includes domain privacy in the Business plan only. Also, the issue is that daily backups for the first year are only in this plan as well. At least you have malware scanning in all plans, which is crucial for keeping your websites safe from harm.

WordPress Hosting

Many people confuse WordPress hosting with typical shared hosting. In essence, most WordPress hosting services rely on shared servers. However, you get WordPress-specific features, which is why those plans tend to be a tad more expensive.

HostGator’s plans don’t change much but now, the entire roster starts with the Baby plan from before. You have Baby and Business plans, with the addition of the Pro plan.

This one costs $13.95/mo, offering:

• 100 websites
• 100 GB of SSD storage
• Maximum performance with 5 vCPUs

Everything else is the same. Of course, WordPress will be pre-installed, as HostGator’s offer is managed hosting. This results in a much easier setup and management later on.

eCommerce Hosting

Opening up an online store is simple with this provider. During our HostGator test, we discovered it only offers two plans with minor price differences.

The Online Store plan has almost all you need, such as:

• 50 GB of SSD storage

• Yoast SEO
• Automated daily backups
• Automated WordPress updates
• Wishlists
• Gift cards, and so on…

The plan starts at $9.95/mo, while the more expensive, Online Store + Marketplace plan, costs $12.95/mo. The only difference is multi-channel inventory management, which allows you to sell goods on multiple platforms, rather than being limited to your site.

Dedicated Hosting

Dedicated hosting is HostGator’s top offer. You pay only $141.19/mo to have your own resources and enjoy faster hosting speeds and unlimited bandwidth. HostGator offers:

• 1 dedicated IP
• Free Migration
• Unmetered bandwidth.

As you can see, NVMe storage appears here, and as you’ll see, in the VPS hosting offers. We dislike that NVMe storage is excluded from web hosting plans, which isn’t the case with Hostinger which offers this extremely fast storage at $3.99/mo in its Business plan.

Another thing – HostGator offers Linux AND Windows servers, which adds to ease of use. Most dedicated hosting providers are limited to Linux, which gives HostGator an edge.

VPS & Reseller Hosting

Finally, you’ll be able to enjoy VPS hosting with HostGator’s next-gen AMD EPYC servers.

You have three plans to pick from, such as:

• Snappy 2000 NVMe 4 at $34.99/mo
• Snappy 4000 NVMe 8 at $53.99/mo
• Snappy 8000 NVMe 16 at $82.99/mo

Their specs are displayed in the screenshot. Essentially, you get unmetered bandwidth, NVMe storage, a dedicated IP, and a free migration. HostGator’s VPS hosting is also branded as a “Reseller” because you can purchase a virtual private server and resell it to other users.

HostGator’s VPS hosting isn’t the best value. Compared to Hostinger, whose KVM 8, the most expensive plan, costs $19.99/mo, HostGator might not be to your liking. On the flip side, Hostinger limits you to Linux servers at the cost of more computing resources.

Ease of Use & Hosting Management

During our HostGator test, we were surprised at how simple it is to use. The initial setup is basic, and after you register, you’ll be plunged into Hostgator’s dashboard within seconds. We like its originality, as the company combines cPanel and a home-baked dashboard.

On the left, you’ll be able to access Home, where you can preview your websites, open the file manager, and see server information. From here, you can also access the Marketplace, which houses hundreds of apps that enhance your website’s functionality.

Some of these are free, some paid – it’s yours to explore.

HostGator’s dashboard also allows for easy access to its cPanel. We love cPanel because it’s available on almost all popular web hosts. Hostinger, for example, uses hPanel, which is a more streamlined version of cPanel and our preferred option. Still, this one is bang-on.

It’s easy to access your tools and find specific ones via a search bar. You can, for instance, access Softaculous, which lets you install and manage your WordPress apps. This piece of software is incredibly useful for racking up all the useful apps and add-ons to your site.

HostGator Website Builder Review

You can build your website using HostGator’s web builder or opt for WordPress and its ubiquitous themes. More about that later in the HostGator review.

For now, we want to mention its website builder.

Namely, when you purchase a subscription, you won’t get access to it. It’s paid separately, although you can try it for free by simply signing up. In case you want to buy it, you have three plans, all of which include:

• Free domain for a year
• Removal of the website banner ad
• Advanced website statistics

Depending on the plan, the website builder includes 3 to unlimited store products and 3% to no store transaction fees. You also get basic to advanced shipping management but not many advanced features. Part of that is because HostGator is similar to Weebly, which isn’t great.

Website Building Experience

We compared Wix to Weebly and concluded that the former is way ahead. Weebly includes over 50 templates and rather basic tools – HostGator has around 200 templates.

In our HostGator review, we found that you can build your site with little help from HostGator’s AI. Once you answer a few questions, the website will be set up and you can edit it on your own accord. Again, nothing groundbreaking – we’ve seen better web builders.

Sadly, it doesn’t allow for much freedom compared to Wix, which lets you express your imagination and make a stunning website. The drag-and-drop editor is functional but the template structure isn’t prone to extreme changes and tiny customization quirks.

We can understand this; HostGator is a web hosting provider, not a website builder. Still, we’d like a bit more features here. For example, Bluehost offers an AI website builder, which works wonderfully and makes website creation easier. This one is intuitive, that’s good.

But don’t expect 900+ templates, advanced eCommerce features, and so on. However, you can edit the mobile view of your site, which is a refreshment coming from Weebly. This, in turn, makes the web builder less constrained and a bit better for proper visual optimization.

We still think Wix is a perfect choice if WordPress isn’t your cup of tea. It’s way more capable and includes a free domain, plus the option to add collaborators and assign different roles.

Can I Use HostGator for WordPress Sites?

Yes, you can and it’s very good!

HostGator offers managed WordPress hosting plans, as stated earlier in our in-depth review. On top of that, the whole setup is extremely intuitive, as the provider lets you install WordPress in seconds through your cPanel.

Before that, you’ll click “Install WordPress” on your dashboard, where you’ll need to provide a few bits of information. After that, follow the steps to install WordPress and set everything up. Another method you can use is Softaculous; an easy-to-use WordPress installer.

Softaculous will set up WordPress for you, while HostGator’s Cloudflare CDN will embed the much-needed security for your website. During the process, you will be required to provide your username, password, and domain name, along with other information.

During our HostGator testing, that was a few-minute process. Once WordPress is set up, you can apply the theme, install the plug-ins you need, and start writing blogs, filling out your online store, and whatnot.

HostGator Performance Test: Is It Fast Enough?

Our HostGator review and analysis will cover the performance aspect – a mandatory step.

HostGator is famous for its fast storage and stable performance, explaining why millions of people use it. However, we wanted to check if that’s true by hosting a website on HostGator and testing it using GTmetrix, which displays an overview of the website’s performance.

We performed two tests. One was with the server in Vancouver, while the other was with the server in London. Before we start, we’ll mention that HostGator offers data centers in:

• Atlanta
• Georgia
• Utah
• Provo

They claim to have servers in “other locations” but don’t state which. Still, it’s good to know that the provider’s majority of servers are on US soil. Is it ideal? Far from it. Hostinger, in comparison, has 8, while SiteGround has 7 server locations across the USA, Australia, and Europe.

First GTmetrix Test (Vancouver)

When using the default option, which was the server in Vancouver, these were the results:

The performance was indeed great, with LCP of 594 ms and TTI of 603 ms. All parameters are highlighted in green, which is a telltale sign of great performance. Especially impressive is the speed index of 763 ms, which should be under 1.3 s – for us, it was way below.

We can see that browser timings are stellar too. TTFB of 60 ms is impressive, for example, but FLT of Fully Loaded Time of 1.7 s isn’t. We recorded Hostinger’s FLT using the same testing server at 733 ms, which means it took 50%+ less time to load an entire page.

Second GTmetrix Test (London)

Given HostGator’s US server, using the testing server location in London should yield worse results.

That’s actually the case but not by a huge margin. However, an LCP of 714 ms is indicative of slightly slower loading times. Everything else remained the same, except for CLS, which was 0.02 instead of 0.05. Keep in mind both results are fantastic – everything under 0.1 is.

Browser timings were a bit different. FLT now jumped to 2.0 seconds instead of 1.7 seconds. Not a noticeable difference but a present one. TTFB is now 97 seconds, which is still fast, despite being, on paper, higher than the previous test result.

Response Time and Uptime

One thing left to check – or two things, better said, are response time and uptime.

Like the best web hosts, HostGator promises a 99.9% uptime. Achieving 100% most of the time is impossible but when we tested HostGator using Pingdom, we were surprised at how well it performed in this regard. For example, it had a 100% uptime in the past 6 months.

As for the response time, HostGator scored an average of 452 ms. It’s not blazing-fast but not slouch-like either. This performance review of HostGator is a positive surprise. Apart from average response times, the hosting provider performs on par with its flagship status.

Though, it’s worth noting that Hostinger and SiteGround are a bit faster options overall.

How Safe and Secure Is HostGator?

Website security should be taken seriously and quite frankly, most providers know this. Some, of course, skimp on features in their plans, requiring you to pay more for them. Some, like Hostinger and SiteGround, include everything in one plan, making your life easier.

HostGator is somewhere in between. Depending on the plan you choose, you’ll get basic security features that function well:

• Free SSL certificate
• Malware scanning
• Cloudflare CDN

Cloudflare CDN isn’t in the Hatchling plan, so keep that in mind. When it comes to malware scanning, it’s HostGator’s server-bound firewall, which monitors the server 24/7, detecting and eliminating malware in the process. You’ve noticed a few things lacking.

What about more advanced malware protection and DDoS protection?

That’s a paid extra. HostGator lets you buy the SiteLock suite at $7.99/mo. It’s a useful add-on for stronger security but at this price, you’re better off with Hostinger’s default malware protection and DDoS protection, both of which do an amazing job.

An infuriating thing is the lack of automatic daily backups in the two cheapest plans – Hatchling and Baby. You can buy them through the Business plan at $6.25/mo OR just pay $1.99/mo, $4.99/mo, or $8.99/mo on top depending on the number of websites you have.

If you want the most secure web hosting, HostGator won’t cut it if you don’t pay for its pricier plans. Hostinger, SiteGround, and InMotion Hosting are better in this aspect. To really amplify HostGator’s security, you’ll have to pay up to ~$100/mo on TOP of your plan.

Customer Support of HostGator

Even customer support differs based on the chosen plan. The Hatchling option for those on a budget will provide chat support. Honestly, it’s enough for the most part because HostGator’s support team is extremely responsive and is there 24/7, which is commendable.

However, if you want more, all you have to do is update to the next tier and get chat AND phone support. The latter is convenient if you have a serious problem in dire need of immediate fixing. This way, you can get rid of the issue and move on with your work.

Our favorite method is by far live chat. You don’t even need to fill out the data like your email, phone, etc. Just click the widget and boom – the support team agent picks you up, immediately tackling your issue. We love this no-quibble approach.

Those too shy to chat can rely on the knowledge base. It’s saturated with articles and how-to guides to resolve your issues in minutes. By default, however, HostGator lacks a ticketing system and email support BUT that doesn’t mean the company makes no exceptions.

If there’s a serious problem, they’ll open the ticket and work on it. Overall, the support team is well-organized, helpful, and reliable. Everything your heart desires.

The Final Verdict: Is HostGator Worth It?

HostGator is respected and revered by many web hosting experts. We found it easy to set up, with more than respectable performance and a diverse portfolio of hosting solutions, allowing for scalability, which growing businesses will appreciate.

Unfortunately, HostGator is let down by such peculiar weaknesses that could be worked on by the company in the near future. Its security is by far the weakest link, and to make things worse, you have to spend a fortune to bring it to the level of Hostinger or SiteGround.

Its website builder is also underwhelming, so it’s better to opt for WordPress most of the time. Also, Hostinger’s expensive VPS hosting won’t suit everyone, more so because computing resources are inferior to, again, Hostinger, which costs way less.

At the end of our HostGator review, we promised our buying recommendation.

So, do we recommend it?

Honestly, we’re inclined to say NO. At this price, Hostinger is a way better and more equipped option. You can even buy its mid-tier Business plan at roughly the same price, with advanced security features, faster speeds, and a beefed-up website builder.

Also consider SiteGround with a similar price, yet, more feature-packed plans.
