CNet’s David Carnoy has a word of warning for the less-Froogled among us: be sure to make sure your shiny new gadget isn’t a clone, or you might be paying too much. Many electronics firms purchase and brand devices from other vendors, then pass the savings on to themselves. CNet has broken down a few examples of some of the more egregious consumer screwings over out there now, ranging from as little as $17 to as much as $600, depending on the product. Obviously Carnoy was inspired by our readers’ sharp-eyed catch that the RCA DRC618N Tablet DVD player was originally a rebranded Coby unit; it’s okay, David, everybody rebrands stuff as their own, right?
