Some PR firm in Britain has written a white paper about using “Bluejacking” (the practice of surreptitiously sending messages to strangers over Bluetooth) as a marketing tool. Hey, if you’re looking for a way to finally kill off Bluetooth, Bluespam is probably the way to do it. If the general public thinks they’re going to get wirelessly spammed because their phones have Bluetooth built-in, what do you think is going to happen? It almost doesn’t matter that the potential for Bluespamming is actually pretty low. Alberto of SmartMobs (and CacheOp) points out that since Bluejacking only works if someone has their phone set to discoverable mode (which is not the default setting on most devices), it won’t be possible to Bluespam most people, which hopefully will deter most marketers from bothering with it.
