In its infinite wisdom, the government of the state of California has passed a law banning recording devices from all movie theaters. The law is aimed at people using camcorders to bootleg films, but you could conceivably be thrown in jail for up to a year if you’re spotted with one of those new video cellphones or even a tape recorder. The law goes into effect on January 1st, we’ll see if anyone actually gets arrested for having a video phone with them. Our question is, isn’t illegally recording a movie in a theater already covered by copyright law?
