After We’re All Going to the World’s Fair and I Saw the TV Glow, film fans know what to expect from writer-director Jane Schoenbrun: freaky and surreal yet deeply emotional stories backed by dazzling, often disturbing, visuals. That’s not to suggest Schoenbrun is predictable; as the teaser for their latest, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma, perfectly demonstrates, their works are wildly original—even when, as this new film does, they riff on something as familiar as a summer camp slasher movie.
There’s definitely some David Cronenberg and David Lynch influence going on there, but also a lot of Schoenbrun’s distinctive style too. Billed as “a new kind of horror remake,” Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma stars Hannah Einbinder (Hacks) and the legendary Gillian Anderson—doing what sounds like a very spooky Southern accent here.
The movie is also described as “continuing a body of work shaped by themes of trans identity and queer horror,” and the plot description is as follows: “After years of slapdash sequels and waning fandom, the Camp Miasma slasher franchise is handed over to an enthusiastic young director for resurrection. But when she visits the original movie’s star, a now-reclusive actress shrouded in mystery, the two women fall into a blood-soaked world of desire, fear, and delirium.”
Yes. We will absolutely be injecting all of this directly into our eyeballs come August 7, when Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma hits theaters. Aside from Einbinder and Anderson, the cast also features Amanda Fix, Arthur Conti, Eva Victor, Zach Cherry, Sarah Sherman, Patrick Fischler, Dylan Baker, Jasmin Savoy Brown, Kevin McDonald, Quintessa Swindell, and Jack Haven.
