2016 is a special year for Marvel’s First Avenger; it’ll mark 75 years since Steven Rogers burst his way onto the comics scene by punching Hitler in the face. To celebrate, ABC will host an hour-long special dedicated to Cap, one that’s promising a big comic book reveal and potential hints for Civil War.
The special is due to air January 19th, just before Agent Carter makes its belated debut with a two-hour premiere at 8pm. It’ll feature interviews and insight with a whole host of Marvel TV, movie, and comic book creatives like Stan Lee and Joe Quesada, the cast of Agents of SHIELD, and live-action Steve and Peggy themselves, Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell.
It’d be unsurprising if we didn’t see anything from Captain America: Civil War, considering concept art from Age of Ultron was first debuted in a similar special last year—and as we’ve already had a glimpse of actual Civil War footage, it wouldn’t be surprising if there was a new clip or even a new trailer. But most interestingly, Marvel are actually going to use the special to reveal an “exclusive announcement” for the comic books:
This special one-hour event follows the history of Captain America from 1941 to present and explores how the character has been a reflection of the changing times and the world he has existed in throughout the years. Fans will hear from various Marvel luminaries including Stan Lee, Joe Quesada, Clark Gregg, Ming-Na Wen, Chloe Bennet, Jeph Loeb, Louis D’Esposito, Chris Evans and Hayley Atwell, as well as family members of Cap’s creators. “Marvel’s Captain America: 75 Heroic Years” will also unveil an exclusive announcement from Marvel comics.
Whatever it is, it’s presumably big if Marvel wants to announce it via a TV special rather than just your average press release or what have you (for reference, Sam Wilson was unveiled as Steve Rogers’ replacement on The Colbert Report). So it seems like there could be a similarly huge change in store for either Sam or Steve—who still hangs around with the Uncanny Avengers in the comics as Old Man Rogers, basically—in the near future. Begin your speculation now!
