Cassette player, 2004 style

I’m having a hard time deciding what it is that suprises me more about this announcement – the fact that it’s about a tape player, or the fact that it’s a new tape player that costs about $80 USD. I didn’t even know they made these things anymore, much less continue to try and innovate the market.

And by “innovate,” I mean “add a speed control.” Didn’t tape players have these even when people actually used them? Sony must have conveniently forgotten that, unless I’m inconveniently missing something. You’ll get a 68-hour battery life from this player, but who cares? It’s a tape player.

As for intended uses, Sony points towards “English communication.” Maybe because it’s the only damn thing people use tape players anymore for.
