China introduces the Enhanced Versatile Disc

Just to make this whole mess over which standard will succeed the DVD, a Chinese business consortium and two Chinese DVD manufacturers are rolling out the Enhanced Versatile Disc, or EVD. The idea is to have a homegrown standard to avoid paying royalties to non-Chinese electronics congolomerates that developed the DVD. Which certainly makes some economic sense if you’re a manufacturer, but why a consumer would choose an EVD player over a DVD player is somewhat less clear. EVD players are going to have to be a lot cheaper to convince people that they’re not just better off buying a DVD player.
