China Says It Arrested Hackers That Attacked the US. I Want to See the Receipts!

It smells like bullshit in China’s PR shop.

Yesterday, China’s state-run news agency said that criminals—not the government—stole data from the US Office of Personnel Management. Meanwhile, the Washington Post reported that China claims to have arrested those criminal hackers back in September.

This is a bad story for the US government. If the OPM culprits were thieves and not government-affiliated spies, the US looks even more inept than it already did. Getting data hijacked in a blisteringly sophisticated digital war between superpowers sounds better than getting burgled by randoms from half a world away.

This is a very good story for the Chinese government. Not only is it blameless in the hacks, it also put a stop to them, imprisoning nefarious citizens for their unscrupulous treatment of America, at the bequest of America. How brotherly. Peace! Love! No sanctions!

It’s also the most whoa if true thing I’ve heard in my life. There’s no reason to believe China here.

It’s possible that Chinese hackers went mercenary and broke into OPM to sell the data to the highest bidder. OPM’s hackers stole personal information from 22 million US employees and their families, from social security numbers and fingerprints to detailed histories with drugs and alcohol. The data trove is a blackmailer’s playground, and plenty of non-government-sponsored criminal rings could want it. There is absolutely no supporting evidence to suggest that’s true, though, besides taking China’s word for it.

It’s more plausible that these hackers were selling to the Chinese government, trained by the Chinese government, or straight-up working for the Chinese government. Remember that the Chinese government has a rich history of denying its involvement with hacks. Over the past year, China and its state-affiliated spies and hackers have been accused of reading the Obama Administration’s emails, attacking anti-censorship websites, and recently hacking Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology computer.

The Chinese government’s savvy hacking skills are well documented—perhaps its impressive bluffing skills deserve some recognition too.

‘Hacker’ is such an inadequate word.

Why spend $Billions on R&D when you can easily liberate it? Why spend years compiling government personnel data when you have ‘contractors’ that can easily provide it? Why try to guess what the superpower (customer) that you are manufacturing goods for, is thinking, when you have more cohesive information available to you than they have colligated on themselves.

“Xiasha” is an extremely dedicated and Internationally educated “Technological Development Area” with massive Chinese government support and essentially ‘infinite’ sponsorship from corporate entities and private industry as well. An endlessly capable resource of multi-data research coagulation and orchestration that the west can only dream of. Imagine a large geographical area where every university, every company, every corporation, every research grant post-grad, and every contractor, are all working seamlessly with near limitless resources... (with no military overriding influence), all comparing notes in real time

Now think of a tight knit group of brilliant network artists and code manipulators, along with other cohesively arranged research groups, all based on the understanding of harvest & covergence, plausibility... and implausibility. Yeah, again... Xiasha.

The US knows about it, and can’t DO anything about it.

OK. Whether privately generated or government sponsored, Chinese think tanks are extremely far advanced in a huge multinational game of ‘GO’. The USA just being one large intersection of tightly coreographed pincer movements that will continue to be exploited and... manipulated.

Good luck with this Obama. I’m thinking Hillary can dance the waltz with China a bit better. Republicans? Clown suited fart smellers in this game. The only strategy they have on anything is to lie to everybody and stupidly go to war so their investors can make unbridled fortunes. Our world can no longer allow this. Think about it.
