Edward Gorey’s alphabetical poem of child death, The Gashycrumb Tinies is a masterpiece of the macabre, and we’ve seen all sorts of reinterpretations, most recently in Doctor Who and Game of Thrones-themed death rhymes. Horror writer Clive Barker has decided to write his own tribute to Gorey’s poem, which at first seems a straight homage, but gradually turns more and more grisly.

Barker is collaborating with artist Paulo Andreas Lorca on this project. There’s a certain dark humor in Barker’s rendition, but he doesn’t inflict Gorey’s absurdly droll deaths on his characters. This is a far more gruesome—and disturbing—rendition than the original, adding a nightmarish filter to the Gorey-inspired black and white illustrations. The series so far (with the more violent bits included) is up at Barker’s Facebook page.
