Doctor Who still pushes the envelope sometimes in terms of horrific imagery and terrifying concepts — this past year included mummies, cyborg zombies and a host of other nasty ideas. But the concept art for these horrors is usually worse than what ends up on screen. See for yourself!

Above is concept art for the Teller from the episode “Time Heist.” You can see some other moderately disturbing versions of this character below…

These concept art pieces come from Millennium FX, which works on the show, and they were published online at the Radio Times. Check out a ton more of the beastly and bizarre concept art of Doctor Who season eight, along with some more commentary from the Millennium folks, at the Radio Times site — our favorites are below.

Deep Breath

Robot of Sherwood: The Hunter was an unused character with a skull face inside his robot head. Plus some other cool knight designs, including gun-face!

Time Heist: The Teller went through some pretty monstrous versions

The Caretaker – The Skovox Blitzer went through a lot of variations…

Kill the Moon – there are a couple of really insane sketches of the Moon spider

Dark Water/Death in Heaven – Danny could have looked a bit grosser, plus a Cyberman skeleton and a different version of a mausoleum corpse.
