Director Curry Barker had already finished filming his new movie, Anything but Ghosts, when the world became obsessed with Obsession. Focus Features saw the potential in the filmmaker and snagged the rights well before Barker and his team became the success stories of last summer. And now, we know they’ll be back to scare us again this summer.
This week, Focus set May 7, 2027, as the release date for Anything but Ghosts. Curry directs the film, from a script he co-wrote with long-time friend and collaborator Cooper Tomlinson. The pair also star as “wannabe ghost hunters who find themselves in over their heads as things spiral wildly and terrifyingly out of control.” Megan’s Violet McGraw co-stars along with Bryce Dallas Howard and Aaron Paul. “I think it’s going to be really unique because it, to me, lives in the same world [as Obsession],” Barker told us about the film earlier this year. “You could put these two movies side by side and go, ‘Yeah, like, they probably live [together].’ Like, the tone isn’t going to be a crazy shift, but I will say that it’s very different than Obsession in the aspect of like, the premise itself lends itself well to comedy. And so naturally, it’s a lot funnier. I mean, it’s about two ghost hunter con artists. So that premise alone just lends itself better to comedy in a way that this premise didn’t. So naturally, you’re going to get more comedic scenes. It’s me and Cooper. So it’s kind of a comedic duo. But also, we take the stakes very seriously. It should be set in a very real world.”
Anything But Ghosts will now help kick off summer 2027, a week after Sony’s The Legend of Zelda. It’s the same window Obsession opened in earlier this year, and that worked out pretty well. We’re not sure if this will gross $500 million, but even a fraction of that will be considered anything but a failure.
