So I've blabbed at you guys about Cymbals Eat Guitars a couple of times before. But this time I'm extra serious. "Rifle Eyesight (Proper Name)" is my favorite jam of theirs, and dare I say the best? I dare. It is.
The lead track of Cymbals Eat Guitars' (fantastic) sophomore effort Lenses Alien, "Rifle Eyesight" can be tough nut to crack. That's why I've been reluctant to soundtrack all this time. There's a learning curve, but fuck it; you guys can hack it. That is, if you really want to. And you should.
You see, Rifle Eyesight is a big song. It's a journey. It's a hike. It's got that same chill-enducing sense of sheer enormity that you'll hear in "And The Hazy Sea," but the path is a winding one. "Rifle Eyesight" doesn't have a really good hook to latch onto. Instead, it has a big collection of extended, complex-but-terrifically-melodic trills. Except there's little repetition, and they're gone before you can really sink your teeth in. And if that wasn't enough to alienate you, there are some esoteric speed bumps where things slow down to almost static.
Also it's fucking long.
But god damn if it isn't amazing; there's so much there to love. Full disclosure: when this tune came out in late summer 2011 (oh wait, two years ago yesterday! holy shit!) I must have listened to it 20 times before it clicked, but the payoff was so worth it. And to this day, I maintain that 7:20-8:13 is the best 53 seconds of music to listen to at ear-shattering volumes. Bar none.
